SOLITARY CONFINEMENT SETTLEMENT ANNOUNCED BY STATE

September 1, 2015 (Oakland)--Thousands of inmates are set to be released from solitary confinement in California prisons, following settlement of a legal case reached between the state and prisoners held in isolation for a decade or more at Pelican Bay State Prison. Prisoners there spend up to 23 hours a day confined in windowless cells with no access to mail, the law library or other services. A United Nations official has called the confinement cruel and unusual punishment akin to torture.

SYCUAN HOSTS POW-WOW SEPT. 11-13

 

September 1, 2015 (San Diego’s East County) - The Sycuan band of the Kumeyaay nation will host its 26th annual pow-wow September 11-13 at the tribe’s pow-wow grounds, next to the Casino at 5459 Sycuan Road on the Sycuan reservation in El Cajon.

SUPREME COURT ACTION REQUIRES COUNTY CLERKS TO ISSUE MARRIAGE LICENSES TO GAY COUPLES

August 31, 2015 (Washington D.C.) – The U.S. Supreme Court today denied a request from a county clerk in Kentucky who sought to be excused from issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples due to her religious beliefs.
