Learn about new garden volunteer and educational programs in and around La Mesa including gardening classes, backyard garden builds and fruit tree harvesting for donation to nonprofits serving neighbors with limited incomes.
The Summer Fruit Tree Pruning workshop will be led by Paul Maschka, who has been in the horticulture industry for over 25 years, has worked as a seed technician, plant propagator, landscape designer, lead horticulturist for the San Diego Zoological Society for 20 years, organic farmer, and for the last 3 years he has been employed at San Diego City College as Urban Farm Manager/Educator. Paul also teaches courses in sustainable urban agriculture at City College.
In the Pruning workshop, participants will discuss and learn techniques of pruning fruit trees while they are actively growing. This topic is often mystifying to people because of the explosion of growth we encounter in spring and early summer, but there are a few simple principles that will be covered to help demystify this dilemma. Summer pruning is especially important for deciduous fruit trees. The season is ripe for this activity so go out on a limb with Paul; it’s bound to be fruitful!
