March 12, 2017 (La Mesa) – A passenger in the backseat of a 2005 Infiniti Q45 traveling east on I-8 near Fletcher Parkway was injured by a bullet fired from a passing vehicle at 4 a.m. At least five rounds were fired, said California Highway Patrol Officer Kevin Pearlstein.

The driver of the Infiniti,20, a San Diego man, had earlier parked at the Denny’s Restaurant off 70th street to try and fix a broken rear window stuck in the down position, but was not able to repair it.  There were three passengers:  an El Cajon woman, 20, in the front seat, a San Diego woman, 23, in the left rear seat and a man, 20, from Lancaster in the right rear seat.

An unknown vehicle pulled alongside the Infiniti and for unknown reasons, someone in the vehicle opened fire.

The male passenger in Infiniti’s right rear seat, which had the open window, was struck in the shoulder. He was taken to Sharp Memorial Hospital via ambulance for treatment of the non-life threatening injury.

The freeway was shut down while police looked for further evidence, reopening at 7:25 a.m.  The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information please contact the CHP El Cajon Area Office at 619-401-2000.
