Local sports-themed hair care provider challenges team members and clients to make calls home possible for deployed and hospitalized U.S. service members through VFW’s Operation Uplink™

October 16, 2012 (Santee) -- Beginning October 15, Sport Clips Haircuts in Santee at 9349 Mission Gorge Road will join more than 950 of the franchise’s locations across the country in launching its annual “Help A Hero” fundraising campaign to support the Veterans of Foreign Wars’ (VFW) Operation Uplink™.

Sport Clips’ goal is to raise $500,000 in its sixth year of donating to the program, which offers free call days to deployed and hospitalized U.S. service members. The campaign will continue through Veterans Day, November 11, when $1 from every haircut service will go to Operation Uplink.

“As a local business owner, I’m proud to join this effort to support our nation’s heroes – many of whom are on their third or fourth deployment or fighting to recover from war injuries in hospitals,” says Terry Klinker, Sport Clips owner. “The free calls Help A Hero sponsors will help keep these service members and their families – many of whom are right here in San Diego – connected monthly.  We have two hair stylists at the Santee store whose husbands are currently serving our country, so they are extra motivated to insure we do well again this year in our fundraising efforts.”

Klinker’s stores will raise funds through a variety of different means, including in-store donations, softball tournaments at Sportsplex USA, concession sales at Qualcomm, and parking lot events.  They will also offer free haircuts to any active-duty servicemen on Veterans Day, Sunday, November 11th.  All retired military will receive their 20% discount with proof of their past military service.

“There is still a great demand for the Operation Uplink program despite the drawdown in troops. The brave men and women who’ve been hospitalized or who are still serving in harm’s way need and deserve the connection home,” says VFW National Commander John Hamilton. “Our commitment to troops doesn’t diminish with a drawdown and we’re very grateful to have Sport Clips on our side to share in our commitment.”

To date, Sport Clips and its clients have donated more than $1.3 million dollars to Operation Uplink, making almost 2 million phone calls home possible for U.S. service members. Sport Clips is now the VFW’s largest Free Call Day” sponsor.
