October 2, 2015 (La Mesa)--Lamplighters Community Theatre in La Mesa continues its current season with a mystery. Stage Fright by Charles Marowitz will run Oct. 9-Nov. 8.
A leading metropolitan drama critic is led by an attractive production assistant into a recently discovered 19th century theatre. There, the critic will film a television interview for a documentary on the actor John Wilkes Booth, who once acted on those very boards. The critic, F.F. Charnick, notorious for his venomous reviews, visibly warms to the classy elegance of the British P.A. But no sooner has he downed a glass of wine than he falls drugged and unconscious.
When he awakens, he is firmly tied to a Shakespearian throne on the stage of the old theatre with an ominous woman intoning Lady Macbeth beside him. The attractive PA has turned into Mitzi Crenshaw, an actress whom he has savaged in dozens of reviews. She now plans to carry out an elaborate plot to murder the man who virtually destroyed her and her husband's career. Her husband also joins the scene. The torture carries on, inspiring blood curdling confessions from the critic and ending with the actors granting him a reprieve - but not before his most embarrassing revelations have been taped on video.
This production is suitable for ages 13 and over due to mild adult situations and language.
Stage Fright is directed by Jerry Pilato, and produced by George Bailey. Pilato most recently directed the comedy The Hallelujah Girls at Lamplighters.
“When asked to pick a play for the October slot for Lamplighters’ 2015-2016 season,” says Pilato, “I wanted something that had a mystery sort of theme..something with twists and turns that was a bit scary in story line and humorous in a dramatic way. Most people involved with staging a production from asting to opening will definitely understand what the characters in this play are going through. Although it has its comedic value, there is a lot more written between the lines. I feel the audience will tune in to the characters’ feelings. It is never easy to be criticized or chastised publicly.”
