SUSPECTED GAS THIEF INJURED AFTER PURSUIT, CRASH IN ALPINE

November 13, 2017 (Alpine) - A suspect who fled from Sheriff’s deputies after allegedly trying to steal gas or tampering with county gas pumps on Tavern Road in Alpine this morning has crashed the Toyota Camry he was driving and wound up air lifted to a trauma center.

According to Sergeant Juan Lopez, the 25-year-old suspect led deputies on a chase toward Dehesa Road at speeds up to 60 miles an hour for about a half mile, before he missed a curve and crashed down a steep ravine.

The injured suspect then fled on foot and was found about an hour later hiding in this brush east of the crash site.

Deputies provided first aid and fire department personnel assisted in extracted the suspect from the ravine.  He was air lifted to a local trauma hospital for medical treatment.

He is expected to recover from his injuries, but will face charges of delaying and evading an officer.
