February 15, 2019 (San Diego) - Behind a combined 17 strikeouts, the San Diego State baseball team opened its 2019 season with an 8-4 win against San Francisco on Friday night at Tony Gwynn Stadium.

Logan Boyer set a new career-high with 10 strikeouts in five innings. Justin Goossen-Brown and Daniel Ritcheson followed Boyer in relief and maintained SDSU’s lead through the late stages, combining for four innings pitched with three hits and two runs allowed. Ritcheson struck out five of the 11 batters he faced.

February 13, 2019 (San Diego) - Behind a standout defensive performance, the Aztec women’s basketball team (10-12, 5-6) knocked off Colorado State (8-15, 2-10) 54-45 Wednesday evening inside Viejas Arena. SDSU held the Rams to 28 percent shooting from the field and held them to seven points or less in the first and third quarter.

SDSU LIBRARY ARCHIVE DETAILS DETAINEES' PATH TO SEEKING ASYLUM, CONDITIONS INSIDE DETENTION

 

 

A new archive of hundreds of letters between a group of volunteers and asylum seekers along the U.S.-Mexico border has been developed and is being digitized at the SDSU Library.

February 13, 2019 (San Diego) - What began as a casual gathering of friends has become a first-of-its-kind living archive of handwritten letters shared by hundreds of asylum seekers detained along the U.S.-Mexico border. Those letters, in the collective correspondence, provide a detailed description of each person’s path to pursuing asylum, and the conditions inside detention centers.

SDSU beat Pomona-Pitzer 6-5 in overtime in their first match and then beat Cal State East Bay, who was receiving votes in the latest CWPA poll, 10-3 to secure 13th place in the Triton Invitational.

February 10, 2019 (San Diego) - San Diego State women's tennis improves its record to 5-1 with Sunday’s 4-0 win over Cal Poly, the team’s second victory of the weekend.

The Scarlet and Black made quick work of the Mustangs on Sunday, setting the tone with two fast wins in doubles to claim the first point. Sophomore Nnena Nadozie and freshman Alicia Melosch topped Cal Poly’s Kim Bhunu and Emily Ackerman 6-3 in the second seed, while senior Jenny Moinard and freshman Shakhnoza Khatamova defeated Emily Louie-Meadors and MacKenzie Worsnop 6-3 in the No. 1 seed to get to 1-0 in the dual.

February 10, 2019 (San Diego) - San Diego State dropped its second straight dual match on Sunday after suffering a 4-3 upset at the hands of visiting Northern Arizona under overcast skies at Aztec Tennis Center.

Despite splitting six singles encounters, SDSU found itself in pursuit mode for much of the day after ceding the doubles point for the fourth time in five outings this spring.

February 10, 2019 (Phoenix) - The San Diego State softball team finished its opening weekend with a 9-0 loss to No. 4/4 Oklahoma Sunday at the Grand Canyon University Kickoff Tournament in Phoenix.

The Aztecs (3-2) managed only one hit off Sooner (5-0) pitcher Shannon Saile, a single by West Hills alum Katie Byrd in the top of the first inning. Megan Smith and Molly Sturdivant also drew walks for SDSU.

The Aztecs (3-1) once again used a seventh inning rally to beat Charlotte 5-4 in the opener before falling to the host Lopes (2-2) 9-0 in five innings later in the day.

February 8, 2019 (Albuquerque) - Freshman Nyjari McNeil beat the school record she set last month in the 600 meter run Friday evening to highlight day one of the Don Kirby Invitational for the Aztecs.

McNeil took first place in the 600 meter run and beat her previous record by 0.29 seconds. Sakura Roberson earned a fourth place finish with a time of 1:33.77 and Sara Absten had her best time in three times, finishing in 1:40.34, over five seconds better than her performance last week.

February 7, 2019 (San Diego) - San Diego State head football coach Rocky Long announced the signing Wednesday of eight additional players to National Letters of Intent or Offers of Aid. Including the 14 that signed in the early signing period in December a total of 22 athletes will join the Aztecs for the 2019 season. 

SDSU’s signing class now includes 11 on defense, nine on offense and two athletes. The 22-member class also features 14 from the state of California, three from Texas, two from Arizona, one apiece from Georgia, Hawaii and Washington. Additionally, 18 are high schools and four are college transfers. 

The eight new additions to the class today include two on offense - quarterback Jordon Brookshire (Santa Rosa, Calif./Cardinal Newman HS/Laney CC) and offensive lineman Jacob Jimenez (Pflugerville, Texas/Pflugerville HS/Brigham Young) - five on defense - defensive linemen Jeffrey Blake (Norcross, Ga./Greater Atlanta Christian HS), Liloa Kapiko (Honolulu, Hawaii/St. Louis HS) and Jonah Tavai (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Mira Costa HS/El Camino College), and defensive backs Patrick McMorris (Santa Ana, Calif./Santa Ana HS) and Eric Wilson (Oceanside, Calif./El Camino HS/Riverside City College), and one athlete in Noah Tumblin (San Diego/Mira Mesa HS).

February 4, 2019 (San Diego) - The San Diego State football released its 2019 schedule on Monday. Game times and television arrangements, including moves to non-Saturdays will be announced at a later date.

The Aztecs open their 2019 slate at home on Aug. 31 against Weber State. It will be SDSU’s first meeting with the Wildcats since 1967 and third overall. WSU finished 10-3 last year, falling to No. 7 Maine in a FCS quarterfinal game.

February 2, 2019 (Los Angeles/Flagstaff, Ariz.) - The San Diego State swimmers capped an undefeated run through dual meet action on Saturday, defeating Loyola Marymount 124-103 at the Burns Aquatic Center on Saturday afternoon. Heading into the Mountain West Championships beginning on Feb. 20, the Aztecs are a perfect 13-0 and have finished their fourth undefeated dual-meet season in the last six years.

February 2, 2019 (San Diego) - The Aztec women’s basketball team (7-12, 2-6) withstood a rally from San José State (2-18, 1-8) to win 69-68 Saturday afternoon inside Viejas Arena.

SDSU led by 17 points in the first quarter, but saw the Spartans take their first lead of the game with 16 seconds left after Analyss Benally banked in a three-pointer. On the other end, Téa Adams knifed through the lane and scooped up the game-winner off the glass with two seconds left to secure the nail-biting victory for the Aztecs.
