COUGARS DOWN SPARTANS 41-14 IN OPENER

By Derek Carlyon

September 1, 2013 (Rancho San Diego)--The Friday night lights were back on as East County’s Steele Canyon Cougars faced off against the South Bay’s Chula Vista Spartans in the season opener.  The Cougars were favored to win, but the Spartans would be no walk in the park coming off a 6-5 record just a season ago.  The game focused on Steele Canyon’s high powered offense and the Spartans’ efforts to slow it down and stay in the game.

After exceptional junior Jordan Johnson (who plays both safety and quarterback) led the Cougars deep into Spartan territory, Steele had to settle for a 30-yard field goal by senior kicker Kenneth Bagdasar.  Bagdasar was strong all game, going five of five on point-after-attempts and also booting another 25-yard field goal.  He could easily be one of the best legs in East County this season.

GAME OF THE WEEK BONUS COVERAGE - EAGLES SLOWED BUT NOT STOPPED BY HILLERS

by Christopher Mohr

(SOLANA BEACH) September 26 - One of the most common sports cliches is that some opponents can't be stopped; they can only be contained. Anyone who defended Michael Jordan, pitched to Tony Gwynn or golfed against Tiger Woods knows the concept all too well. So do Santa Fe Christian's first three opponents this season.

GAME OF THE WEEK - BONUS COVERAGE: MONARCHS ENCOUNTER REBELLION AT SFC

by Christopher Mohr

(SOLANA BEACH) - At a private, religious K-12 school like Santa Fe Christian, it's a given that  students are well-versed in the story of David and Goliath. What's doubtful however, is that those who taught that story expected its lessons would be applied to the high school football program.

GAME OF THE WEEK PREVIEW - COUGARS LOOKING TO POUNCE ON VISITING TITANS

by Christopher Mohr

(RANCHO SAN DIEGO) - This Friday, we head to Rancho San Diego to cover the home opener between the Steele Canyon Cougars and the visiting Eastlake Titans.

Steele Canyon (1-1) comes off a 2008 season where they finished 7-6, but won three out of their last four games, going deep in the playoffs. Only a loss to Valhalla kept the Cougars from making a December visit to Qualcomm Stadium.
