Employees Rally to Donate System for Southern California Wounded Warrior

 July 17, 2014 (El Cajon) – American Solar Direct Inc. (ASD) today donated a complete solar energy system at the home of Sgt. Odin Ayala, a wounded veteran in Southern California who touched the hearts of ASD employees.

July 14, 2014 (El Cajon)—Camp Bow Wow hosts its 4^th annual Yappy Hour season at the Downtown Café in El Cajon, where guests are invited to bring your dog and enjoy free appetizers donated by the restaurant.

July 11, 2014 (San Diego and East County) – Assemblywoman Shirley Weber (D-San Diego), whose district includes several East County communities such as La Mesa, Mt. Helix and portions of El Cajon, will host a coffee with constituents this Saturday, July 12. The event will be held from 12-2 p.m. at the  Linda Vista branch library, 2160 Ulric Street in San Diego.

Programs July 15 at Kroc Theatre, July 16 at Embarcadero Marina Park South, and July 17 at Lincoln High School

July 10, 2014 (San Diego)—The San Diego Symphony teams up with local artists and Academy Award-winner Bill Conti (composer of the themes for Rocky and James Bond movies) for a series of free performances in disadvantaged communities. “Your song, your story” is the culmination of a year of outreach in which the Symphony received over 300 submissions from local artists, chose 18 and asked Conti to create a composition inspired by the works celebrating diverse cultural perspectives.

The shows highlight the diversity of San Diego neighborhoods – and each will include a block party celebration complete with free food and entertainment. Performers include many East County groups, such as the Kumeyaay Youth Bird Singers, Soaring Eagles, and Luay Yousif of St. Peters Chaldean Catholic Church.

July 8, 2014 (El Cajon) – The East County Wellness Center, home of the new East County Magazine & Media Center offices, has generously agreed to share wellness tips with our readers. This week’s wellness tips include maintaining limber muscles, inviting bliss into your life, and how to create a meditation space.

Residents question high cost of weed cutting by private contractor

June 24, 2014 El Cajon – The City Council of El Cajon considered issues from a retired police dog to hookah lounges as Mayor Bill Wells gaveled in Tuesday’s meeting.

Councilmember Star Bales displayed items purchased at the El Cajon ‘America on Main Street’ event that she will proudly wear at the Fourth of July celebration at Kennedy Park (photo, left). The Council then voted to retire and release ownership of El Cajon Police dog “Turbo” to Officer Thompson, Turbo’s experienced and sole handler.  Happy retirement Turbo!

The longest discussion of the meeting concerned filing liens on properties of owners who owe money to the City for weed abatement, mandatory trash service and sidewalk repair. The staff recommendation was to authorize the City Clerk to record the amount owed as a lien on the property  and forward the list to the County Tax Assessor for billing on the owner’s next property tax bill.

June 22, 2014 (San Diego’s East County)--Here are highlights of important issues on the agenda this week impacting San Diego's unincorporated areas as well as residents in the cities of El Cajon, La Mesa and Santee.

The San Diego Board of Supervisors meets on Tuesday and Wednesday this week with many important items slated to be heard. On Tuesday, Supervisors will deliberate the county budget and a joint powers agreement with Caltrans for the Next Generation regional communications system and more.

On Wednesday, supervisors will hold a public hearing on proposed changes to the Forest Conservation Initiative Lands General Plan amendment.  This is a controversial  issue that will determine what sort of development will be allowed on properties in the vicinity of Cleveland National Forest in East County.

June 12, 2014 (El Cajon)- The East County Chamber of Commerce had its Rancho San Diego and Jamul Business Roundtable at Hooley’s in El Cajon on Thursday May 29. Jesse Navarro, director of community relations from District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis’ office, and two representatives from the Sheriff’s office spoke about issues businesses and residents have been facing.

June 2, 2014 (El Cajon)--World War II aircraft, paratroopers, mock aerial “dogfights” complete with fireworks, performance flying demonstrations — even an airplane racing a jet-car — will fill the skies and tarmac Saturday and Sunday at “AirShow San Diego” at Gillespie Field in El Cajon.

May 31, 2014 (El Cajon) – The City of El Cajon is reviving the tradition of its former Friendship Festival with a new event called America on Main Street.   The event promises to celebrate the tradition of ethnic diversity, also providing free family fun and live entertainment.
