GRANTS ANNOUNCED TO HELP LOCAL TRIBES BUILD STRONGER FOOD SYSTEMS

San Diego Women’s Foundation, San Diego Foundation & Avila Fund Award $60,000 in Grants to Help Local Tribes Build Stronger Food Systems

February 8, 2024 (San Diego) – San Diego Foundation (SDF), the San Diego Women’s Foundation and the Avila Fund announced today four $15,000 grants, totaling $60,000, to organizations supporting local tribal communities in building healthy, sustainable and culturally relevant food systems.

“San Diego County has the largest number of tribal governments and reservations in the United States with 18 tribal reservations and four tribal nations - the Kumeyaay, Luiseño, Cupeño and Cahuilla - represented across the region,” said Pamela Gray Payton, VP, Chief Impact and Partnerships Officer of SDF. “These grants represent a collaborative investment in fighting food insecurity, poverty and diet-related diseases in our local tribal communities.”

Chairwoman expands efforts to improve lives of Native peoples

December 10, 2020 (Jamul) - On Monday, November 30, Erica M. Pinto, Chairwoman of The Jamul Indian Village of California (JIV), was elected Chair of the Southern Indian Health Council, Inc. (SIHC).  The SIHC, founded in 1982, is a Native American organization which aims to protect and improve the physical, mental, and spiritual health of the Native American community.  Having intermittently served on the 14-member SIHC board since 2004, Ms. Pinto will begin her two-year term as Chair in January 2021.  The Chairwoman, who was honored last month with the American Indian Chamber of Commerce of California’s highest honor, the Warrior Award, has become a recognized leader in the effort to improve the lives of Native peoples.

6TH ANNUAL SPRING GATHERING APRIL 28

April 27, 2012 (Alpine) – The Southern Indian Health Council, Inc. will be holding its 6th annual Spring Gathering on April 28 at 4058 Willows Road, Alpine from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.  The event is to raise public awareness for sexual assault, child abuse and supervised visitation.
