FREE GUIDED FLUME TRAIL HIKE IN LAKESIDE FRIDAY, FEB. 10

If a habitat has all the right elements--grasses, mice, gopher, rabbits and a few other rodent types--the coyote has all it needs to live long and bear young.

DUMANIS FINDS FOUR MORE FATAL SHOOTINGS BY OFFICERS WERE JUSTIFIED

January 10, 2017 (San Diego’s East County) – In addition to exonerating an El Cajon Police officer who fatally shot Alfred Olango in a case that drew national publicity, San Diego District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis today announced that her office will not file charges in four other officer-involved fatal shootings.

This week’s agenda includes a presentation by the County and possible vote on a local park planning area realignment and consideration of a sewer rate increase.  There will also be a public hearing on a proposed Starbucks at Los Coches and Camino Canada.

January 1, 2017 (Lakeside) – A man found in a burned home this morning on Woodland Vista in Lakeside has died. Firefighters from the Lakeside Fire Department rescued and revived a Labrador retriever dog, using a special pet oxygen mask.

DRIVER, 23, DIES IN LATE-NIGHT LAKESIDE CRASH

December 22, 2016 (Lakeside) – A 23-year-old San Diego woman driving a Toyota Solara eastbound on I-8 east of Los Coches Road last night at 11:50 p.m. lost control of her vehicle while changing lanes on the rain-slicked highway.  Her vehicle struck a metal guard rail, then overturned.

MARY’S DONUTS: A SANTEE FAVORITE NOW EXPANDS TO LAKESIDE

November 22, 2016 (Lakeside) -- When you die and go to heaven the first thing you will put in your mouth is one of Mary’s donuts. At least that is what I thought when I bit into one at the new Lakeside location. I am not like Homer Simpson, I don’t dream of donuts…donuts, but these are so fresh and light that I am now a fan.

MISSING LAKESIDE MAN MAY TRY GOING HOME TO LEMON GROVE

 

Update 8 p.m.:   Todd Perkins has been found safe in Lemon Grove.

November 14, 2016 (Lakeside)—The  Sheriff has issued a be-on-the-lookout bulletin for Todd Randolph Perkins,48.  He has been missing since 2:30 p.m.  His caretaker says he may have walked away from his home on Dorsal Drive in Lakeside.

He suffers from a medical condition that causes him to limp.  He has green tattooso on both arms. He is white with brown hair and brown eyes, 5 feet 6 inches tall, and weighs 130 pounds.  He has told his caretaker that he would like to return to his former home on the 7100 block of Broadway in Lemon Grove,though he does not drive.

BARONA POW-WOW SEPT. 2-4 CELEBRATES NATIVE AMERICAN TRADITIONS

The 46th annual Barona Powwow will take place September 2nd -4th at the Barona sports park, located on the Barona reservation in Lakeside just north of the Barona Casino and Resort. Powwows aim to preserve Native American cultural traditions for future generations. 

Barona’s powwow attracts tribal dancers and drummers from across the nation, as they compete for prizes. (Admission for spectators is free). You can also shop for Native American arts and craft items at vendor booths, and purchase food such as Indian fry bread.

FULL CLOSURE OF STATE ROUTE 67 IN LAKESIDE THIS WEEKEND

August 3, 2016 (Lakeside) - Construction crews will close northbound State Route 67 (SR-67) from Winter Gardens Boulevard to Lakeside Avenue and southbound SR-67 from Lakeside Avenue to Mapleview Street Friday, August 5, and Saturday, August 6 from 9 at night until 11 the following morning. Mapleview Street at SR-67 will also be closed intermittently during these hours. Motorists are advised to expect delays and to avoid the area if possible.

July 13, 2016 (Lakeside) -- East County Magazine's show on KNSJ recently sat down with Ana Nita, an investigative journalist and activist who is working on a documentary about controversies involving a proposed sand mine that could have devastating consequences for people and wildlife in Lakeside's picturesque El Monte Valley.

She also discusses apparent conflicts of interest involving Michael Beck, a county planning commissioner with financial ties to the sand mining company, and has called for Beck to resign or be removed. 

As an update, after this interview aired, Supervisor Dianne Jacob's office advised us that she is asking County Counsel for advice on the appropriate way to handle Beck's conflict of interest issue.

May 6, 2016 (Lakeside) – A popular icon in downtown Lakeside—the bull statue atop the former Pinnacle Peak Steakhouse on Maine Avenue—vanished recently, leaving locals to ponder, where’s the beef?

Fortunately the missing steer statue was found this morning not far away, standing on the roof of El Capitan High School—and that’s no bull.

No one has come forward to fess up to steering the statue to the high school, though a senior prank is rumored.

April 25, 2016 (Lakeside) – Yeehaw!  Lakeside’s Rodeo and Western Days Parade took place this past weekend and photographer Randy Jordan of  R. Jordan Photography was there to catch the action, including barrel racing and calf-roping at “Slack Thursday” in the Bulls Only lead-up event to the Lakeside Rodeo.  He also watched the annual parade roll out down Maine Avenue through the heart of downtown Lakeside.

RIDER DIES AFTER HORSE FALLS AT LAKESIDE PARADE GROUNDS

April 24, 2016 (Lakeside) – Yesterday morning’s Western Days Parade in Lakeside was marred by tragedy.   Diana Cavender, an experienced horse trainer and member of the Escondido Mounted Posse, has died of head injuries suffered in a fall that occurred when her horse spooked while she was riding to a staging area after the parade.
