January 18, 2011  (Spring Valley) - The Mt. Miguel Matadors' varsity basketball team visited their crosstown rival, the Monte Vista Monarchs for the opening game of Grossmont Valley league play Friday night (1/14). Both teams played evenly for one half, but an 18-6 scoring run in the third quarter by the Matadors was too much for the Monarchs to overcome as Mt. Miguel won easily, 58-36.

BOYS HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL: MATADORS WIN DIV. III SECTION TITLE AFTER BUZZER OVER VIKINGS 47-46

by Christopher Mohr

(San Diego) March 10 - Harry Brazelton sank a free throw after time expired to give the Matadors of Mt. Miguel High School a thrilling 47-46 comeback victory over the Vikings of La Jolla High School. The game was one of several CIF San Diego Section championships played over the weekend at Jenny Craig Pavilion on the campus of USD.

Brazelton had the ball with just a few seconds left in regulation with the score tied at 46. While going up for a three point shot attempt, he drew a shooting foul a split second before the horn sounded, and was awarded three free throws. He would only need one. With the lanes emptied, Brazelton sank the first free throw attempt, making the other two superfluous.

BOYS HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL: MATADORS WAVE OFF LAST CHANCE COMEBACK BY RAIDERS WITH 51-48 WIN

by Christopher Mohr

(Spring Valley) March 2 - If you weren't at Mount Miguel High School Tuesday night to see the host Matadors play the visiting Raiders of San Diego Southwest High School, you missed out on a real gem. This basketball game had virtually everything you could ask for in a playoff matchup: a packed gym, fans from both teams getting loud and crazy, frequent scoring runs and lead changes and both teams playing with the highest intensity.

Unfortunately for the Raiders, intensity does not always translate to wins. Unable to connect on several potential game tying three-point shot attempts in the last minute, they come up short in a 51-48 loss to Mt. Miguel.
