May 16, 2023 (San Diego) - Cases of Hepatitis A in San Diego County continue to grow, with 28 reported so far this year and 18 of them among people experiencing homelessness (PEH). The County typically reports about two cases of the virus each month with only one case reported in the PEH population last year.

February 21, 2023 (San Diego) -- The County of San Diego has confirmed five hepatitis A cases, including one death, with illness onset between Jan. 10, 2023 and Feb. 6, 2023. Three of the cases were persons experiencing homelessness (PEH), including the person who died. Of the five, there are no known direct contacts and the five cases do not meet the definition of an outbreak as the County normally sees two to three cases per month.

“As a long-time healthcare advocate, I understand the importance of being out in front and transparent with the public about potential threats to the public health,” said Board of Supervisors Chairwoman Nora Vargas. “The disease is 100 percent preventable, and we want to ensure everyone living in our communities, including people experiencing homelessness, have the information they need to live a healthy and safe life.”

June 18, 2018 (El Cajon) - If you were among the San Diego County residents to receive a hepatitis A vaccine before December 1, 2017, it’s time for your second dose of vaccine.

The County’s Health and Human Services Agency is hosting a free hepatitis A vaccination event on Thursday, June 21, at the East Region Public Health Center, 367 N. Magnolia Ave. from 8:00 to 11:00 a.m.

After four weeks with no new cases associated with the local hepatitis A outbreak reported, the San Diego County Board of Supervisors approved a motion Tuesday ending the local public health emergency which began September 1^st.

El Cajon Councilman Gary Kendrick advised East County Magazine today that sunset language in its temporary ban on feeding the homeless in public places means the measure has officially expired, effective immediately.  So it’s now legal once again for organizations to feed the homeless in El Cajon’s parks or other public property.

July 12, 2017 (San Diego) - A fifth person has died as a result of the hepatitis A outbreak in San Diego County that now totals 228 cases, the County Health and Human Services Agency announced today.

May 6, 2017 (San Diego) - A third person has died as a result of the hepatitis A outbreak in San Diego County, and as of May 1 the total case count has risen to 80, the County Health and Human Services Agency announced today.

September 9, 2012 (San Diego) – Anyone who may have eaten at a College Avenue McDonalds on August 25, 26, 27 and 30 is being advised by the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA) that they may have been exposed to the Hepatitis A virus.
