MAN SHOT IN SPRING VALLEY

 

July 26, 2015 (Spring Valley ) – Shortly after midnight Saturday morning, July 25th, Sheriff’s deputies from the Rancho San Diego station responded to a report of a shooting at an apartment at 1034 Leland Street.  Deputies found a 55-year-old man inside who had suffered a gunshot wound to his legs.

FUND AIMS TO HELP FOSTER MOM WITH SPECIAL NEEDS CHILDREN AFTER THIEVES DAMAGE FAMILY’S VAN

July 11, 2015 (Rancho San Diego) – Friends describe Debra Zeldin as an “angel.”  Twice named the County’s foster parent of the year, she has taken in over 60 foster children, specializing in those with special medical needs.  She currently has five children in her care, including a blind, 6-year-old boy for whom she helped obtain a kidney transplant and a 10-year-old girl with muscular dystrophy who  just came home from the hospital when Zeldin discovered her van had been stolen. Two of the children use wheelchairs and one is on a tracheotomy curently.

Now Zeldin needs help –and a friend has launched a fundraising drive to raise money for repairs, since the thieves who stole her van had no insurance or assets and Zeldin’s insurance company has informed her that her policy lacked comprehensive coverage.

WATER CONSERVATION GARDEN OPENS EAST COUNTY ROTARIAN'S NATIVE HABITAT GARDEN

June 28, 2015 (Rancho San Diego) – The Water Conservation Garden at Cuyamaca College held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on June 12th to mark the opening of its newest exhibit, a 400-square foot Native Habitat Garden at the six-acre venue.  Honored guests included San Diego County Supervisor Dianne Jacob and Louise Andres, Rotary International Governor, District 5340.  The Habitat Garden, underwritten by several east San Diego County Rotary clubs, will demonstrate ecology landscaping, a growing gardening movement that emphasizes native plants grown in their natural associations, creating optimal habitat for birds, butterflies, and other beneficial wildlife. The exhibit will also demonstrate best practices for water-wise design, storm water pollution prevention, on-site water reclamation, and gray water systems.

MERCADO FIRE UNDER CONTROL

June 19, 2015 (Rancho San Diego)--A full contingent of CAL-FIRE and San Diego County firefighters were called to fight a smoky 15-acre fire near State Highway 94 and Jamacha Blvd. that broke out Friday afternoon. The highway was closed to traffic in both directions until the fire reached 85 percent containment at 6:30 p.m.

A Sheriff’s Bomb/Arson Unit is investigating. Although an SDG&E substation was lightly damaged in the fire, power to about 20,000 homes was not affected. A man and a woman observed leaving an area known as a homeless encampment in the burn area have been detained for questioning, though no charges have be filed at this time.

The group meets the first Tuesday of the month at 7 p.m. It is a fifteen member advisory body reporting to the San Diego County Board of Supervisors. Applicants must be registered voters residing in the community.

April 17, 2015 (Rancho San Diego)--Six homegrown bands playing an eclectic mix of folk, jazz, pop and rock will perform on two stages on the grand lawn of Cuyamaca College at the Coyote Music Festival noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 2. Now in its seventh year, the entirely student-run festival will provide the community a free afternoon of live music by local talent in a family-friendly venue, where picnic blankets and lawn chairs are the best seats in the house.

March 31, 2015 (Rancho San Diego)--In conjunction with the Spring Garden Festival at Cuyamaca College, the Heritage of the Americas Museum holds a very special drawing each year,  the "Five-Choices Dream Drawing."  The drawing will take place at the museum on Saturday, April 25, at 2:00 p.m.  The prizes represent the four wings of the Museum:  Natural History, Archaeology, Anthropology, and Art, ranging from pre-Columbian artifacts to a carved amethyst and quartz swan.

CUYAMACA COLLEGE PRESIDENT MARK ZACOVIC TO RETIRE

 

March 1, 2015 (El Cajon )--After a career spanning three decades in the California community college system, Cuyamaca College President Mark J. Zacovic has announced his retirement, effective June 30. Zacovic has served as president of Cuyamaca College, with about 9,000 students in Rancho San Diego, since July 2011. He led the college through some of the toughest budgetary challenges in the institution’s 37-year history, ensuring that students continued to receive a quality education while dealing with dramatic spending cuts from Sacramento.

One Location!” and is an Art Sale, Rummage Sale, Jewelry Sale, Gems and Minerals Sale, and a Fossils Sale.  Items for sale are donated by Museum members, over 300 households.

October 9, 2014 (Rancho San Diego)-- Five years ago, Eric Paredes joined the 7,000 U.S. kids who die every year when their heart unexpectedly stops beating due to Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA), a syndrome that happens without warning, as it did for Eric—a healthy student athlete. To mark the fifth anniversary of his passing, the Eric Paredes Save A Life Foundation is hosting a free heart screening at Eric’s alma matter, Steele Canyon High School, on Sunday, November 2 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
