October 27, 2014 (La Mesa) – This weekend’s Soap Box Derby in La Mesa may be the final race for local youngsters.  After 14 years, the event will be terminated unless new sponsors can be found.

AGE RANGE EXPANDED TO 21 FOR LA MESA SOAP BOX DERBY RALLY RACES MARCH 2 AND 3

February 17, 2013 (La Mesa) – By affiliating with National Derby Rallies (NDR), the Drew Ford/Kiwanis Club of La Mesa Soap Box Derby Rally Races set for March 2 and 3 on Junior High Drive in La Mesa, will allow drivers up to age 21 – if they can still fit in the race cars. The cut-off with All American Soap Box Derby is age 17.

“By affiliating with NDR, we are also gaining exposure of our La Mesa races to the NDR family of soap box derby,” said Derby Director Steve Blake.  “NDR, which is based in Bowling Green, Kentucky, focuses on rally races.

June 15 (Del Mar)--The San Diego County Fair is not just games and fun. It also includes the very serious business of judging breeding stock for cattle and other livestock. This is what county fairs used to be centered around. So going to the livestock section is a window to the past.

BARDIN BROTHERS ARE BIG WINNERS OF TWO DAYS OF SOAP BOX DERBY RACING

 

March 7, 2012 (La Mesa) -- Declan and Aidan Bardin of La Mesa dominated the results of the two-day Drew Ford/Kiwanis Club of La Mesa Soap Box Derby Rally Races on March 3 and 4 in La Mesa. Between them the Bardin brothers won four first place trophies, two second place and two third place. The boys are students at Literacy First Charter School in El Cajon.

9TH ANNUAL DREW FORD/KIWANIS CLUB OF LA MESA SOAP BOX DERBY MAY 21

 

 

May 13, 2011 (La Mesa) -- Thirty-six youngsters ages 8 to 17  will race on Saturday, May 21, as they compete in the 9th Annual Drew Ford/Kiwanis Club of La Mesa Soap Box Derby.

The race cars, which are built from kits, achieve 24 mph as the roll down Junior High Drive adjacent to Highwood Park and La Mesa Middle School.

The double-elimination races get underway about 9 am and continue until about 3 pm with trophy presentations.  Winners of the two divisions — stock and superstock — in this derby are sent by the club to Akron, Ohio, to compete in the National All-American Soap Box Derby in July.

THREE HEADED TO AKRON, OH AFTER WINNING LA MESA SOAP BOX DERBY RACES

May 24, 2010 (La Mesa) - Bryce Taylor, Sam Ferguson and Ellen Blackwell each won their respective divisions at the La Mesa Soap Box Derby Race on Saturday (May 22). The course was set up on a downhill section of Junior High Drive next to the La Mesa Middle School. Competitors faced each other in tournament bracket pairings to determine the division winners. 

 
As a result of winning their respective divisions, Taylor, Ferguson and Blackwell earned the right to participate in the National Soap Box Derby, held in Akron, OH in July.

KIWANIS CLUB WILL SEND 3 EAST COUNTY YOUNGSTERS TO OHIO; WHO WILL THEY BE?

May 1, 2010 (La Mesa) -- Three East County youngsters are going to Akron, Ohio, this July to compete in the National All-American Soap Box Derby. They will be winners of their divisions in the 8th Annual Drew Ford-Kiwanis Club of La Mesa Soap Box Derby. Who will they be?

That won’t be known until race day, Saturday, May 22, on Junior High Drive adjacent to La Mesa Middle School.
