PEÑASQUITOS PRESERVE REOPENS AFTER DNA TEST PROVES LION KILLED IS SAME ONE THAT ATTACKED BOY

June 1, 2019 (Rancho Peñasquitos) – The Rancho Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve has reopened to the public after DNA testing proved that a mountain lion killed by state wildlife officers is the same one that attacked a 4-year-old boy.

I-15 CLOSED THIS WEEKEND NEAR STATE ROUTE 56

 

July 24, 2013 (Rancho Penasquitos) – Attention, motorists: Interstate 15 southbound will be closed this weekend between State Route 56 (the Ted Williams Parkway exit) to Rancho Penasquitos Boulevard/Poway Road.

The closure Saturday to Monday is due to drainage improvements. Southbound express lanes will be open as a detour and will be available to all drivers free of charge.

A NEW COMMUNITY GARDEN OPENED AT LOS PENASQUITOS CANYON PRESERVE

October 31, 2012 (San Diego) – County Parks and Recreation hosted the grand opening of a new community garden at Los Penasquitos Canyon Preserve on October 26.  County Supervisor Pam Slater-Price and County Parks and Recreation Director Brian Albright were on hand for the occasion.

May 28, 2012 (San Diego) – In November of 2007, Dad called me. He informed me that he put our Rancho Peñasquitos house of twenty years on the market. I was surprised because it was so abrupt, but I understood that it was time for my parents to move on.

ROBBER IN SKELETON MASK, FEMALE ACCOMPLICE SOUGHT

March 9, 2012 (Rancho Penasquitos)-- San Diego Police Department Robbery Unit detectives are investigating two similar commercial robberies committed by a masked suspect in Rancho Penasquitos.

Surveillance video captured the same female entering the business, just prior to the suspect’s entry, in both cases.

TEEN GIRLS RAPED IN RANCHO PENASQUITOS PARK: POLICE SEEK SUSPECTS

September 6, 2011 (Rancho Penasquitos) San Diego Police Department Sex Crimes detectives are investigating a sexual assault on two teen girls at knifepoint in a Rancho Penasquitos park on Saturday night, September 3. The suspects, both Hispanic men, remain at large.

POLICEWOMAN AND DAUGHTER KILLED IN RANCHO PENASQUITOS

 

July 18, 2011 (Rancho Penasquitos) – Donna Williams, a 32-year-veteran of the San Diego Police Department assigned to the child abuse unit, has been found stabbed to death along with her daughter, Breanna "Bree" Williams, at their home in Rancho Penasquitos.  Donna Williams has worked on many high-profile cases involving children,  including the Danielle Van Damm case.

Brian Williams, 24, has been arrested for the crimes. He is the son of Donna and her late husband, Howard Williams, who was a retired sergeant with the Department.

CYCLING ACCIDENT KILLS BIOTECH EXECUTIVE, SERIOUSLY INJURES YMCA LEADER

June 2, 2011 (San Diego) – A sports utility vehicle struck two bicyclists Tuesday in a rollover crash on Highway 56 in Rancho Penasquitos, killing one cyclist and seriously injuring the other. The deceased has been identified as Nick Venuto of Poway, corporate controller of Sapphire Energy, a biotech company in Torrey Pines. Baron Herdelin-Doherty, president and CEO of the San Diego County YMCA, suffered broken bones in his hips, ribs and arms.

PURSE-SNATCHER ZAPPED BY PASSERBY

March 11, 2011 (Rancho Penasquitos) – A would-be thief opened the car door and stole a purse from a woman, 53, in a parking lot outside Union Bank at 13200 Black Mountain Road yesterday, San Diego Police report. A witness armed with a taser chased the suspect and zapped him with the taser at Paseo Montalban and Twin Trails Drive.

MARTIN LUTHER KING DAY MARRED BY HATE SYMBOLS SPRAYED ON CARS, SCHOOLS AND PARK IN PENASQUITOS AREA

January 17, 2011 (Rancho Penasquitos) – Vandals spray-painted swastikas and “666” (numbers symbolizing the devil) on at least 14 vehicles early this morning, also defacing property at Hilltop Community Park, Black Mountain Middle School, and Sunset Hills Elementary School. A witness reports seeing two white teens spray painting in the area around 1 a.m., the San Diego Union-Tribune reports. Another source indicates they were driving a green car.

“It’s disturbing and shameful,” said Kevin Keenan, San Diego director of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).

TOW TRUCK DRIVERS HITS PEDESTRIAN

December 30, 2010 (Rancho Penasquitos) – A tow truck driver turning onto eastbound Rancho Penasquitos Blvd. from Paseo Montril passed a woman, 58, who was crossing the street in a crosswalk. The driver’s side step caught the pedestrian’s foot, causing serious leg injuries.

CAR WASH EMPLOYEE STABBED IN RANCHO PENASQUITOS

 

May 5, 2010 (Rancho Penasquitos) – An employee of Berry’s Car Wash at 9821 Carmel Mountain Road was assaulted and stabbed shortly before 8 p.m. last night. The victim, who is in his 30s, was preparing to leave the car wash when he spotted the suspect outside the closed business and asked him to leave.
