LABOR LEADER FACES LAWSUITS, CALLS TO RESIGN: UNION DEFENDS KASPARIAN

February 7, 2017 (San Diego) – Two lawsuits have been filed against powerful labor leader Mickey Kasparian, president of the San Diego-Imperial Counties Labor Council and president of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union. Local 135.  Though neither of the cases have been heard in court, some prominent San Diegans are calling on Kasparian to resign.

NEW BILL WOULD LET STRIKING AND LOCKED OUT WORKERS CLAIM UNEMPLOYMENT RELIEF

February 7, 2017 (Sacramento) -- California State Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez Fletcher (D-San Diego) yesterday proposed that workers who have been locked out by their employer or who go on strike against their employer should be eligible to file for unemployment insurance benefits for the duration of their work stoppage.

January 30, 2017 (La Mesa) -- La Mesa Chamber of Commerce president Mary England introduced Supervisor Dianne Jacob as a “ferocious fighters” who “doesn’t back down” on issues important to her constituents. Jacob, who was recently named Chair of the Board of Supervisors, spoke at the Chamber’s first meeting of the year, in keeping with an annual tradition.

January 25, 2017 (San Diego) – President Donald Trump has signed an executive order to cancel the controversial Trans-Pacific Partnership trade pact with 12 Pacific Rim nations.

The action is being hailed by even many Trump opponents who did not support the trade deal, but has drawn criticism from others, particularly in the business community.

FEDERAL RULE CHANGE COUD COST PROPANE USERS MILLIONS, INDUSTRY ASSOCIATION SAYS

January 24, 2017 (Washington D.C.) -- The Trump Administration has not yet announced if it will roll back a rule imposed by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) during the Obama Administration that effective yesterday, imposes $125 million in new costs on propane consumers, according to a press release issued by the National Propane Gas Association (NPGA) last week.

December 16, 2016 (La Mesa and Santee)--The La Mesa Chamber of Commerce announces that applications are now available for the 2017 Miss La Mesa and Miss Santee Scholarship Pageants. Next year’s pageant will be held on Saturday, March 4th, 2017 at the beautiful new theater at Helix Charter High School.

 Each year the two cities seek young women between the ages of 12-26 to participate in a program that has become a tradition in the cities since the late 1960s and is an outstanding mentoring program for young women.

November 24, 2016 (Santee) -- San Diego’s seemingly ever-growing craft beer industry shrank a bit earlier this year, when Twisted Manzanita Brewing threw in the towel and shut down its operations in Santee.

But that unfortunate situation provided a chance for another brewer to expand and jump-start its growth plans.

November 13, 2016 (Rancho San Diego) — Visitors savored an array of local wine vintages, craft brews and foods at the San Diego East County Chamber of Commerce’s 2016 Toast to East County.  Greg Maness of Maness Vineyards, Supervisor Dianne Jacob and Linda McWiilliams, president of the San Diego County Vintners Association, presented three “Dynamic Duo” awards in the annual Trail Blazer awards to a trio of power couples in our wine industry.

The winners were Sarah Babine and Grant Spotts from Granite Lion Cellars in, Steve and Marilyn Kahle from Woof and Rose Winery in Ramona and Drum and Jane Macomber, amateur wine makers and vineyard tour organizers.

SYCUAN TRIBE PROPOSES 11-STORY, 300-ROOM HOTEL AS FIRST PHASE OF LARGER EXPANSION

November 3, 2016 (El Cajon) -- The Sycuan band of the Kumeyaay nation has plans to build a high-rise hotel and expand its casino.

The plans call for an 11-story, 300-room, hotel plus an additional 21,000 square feet of gaming space with 500 new devices, bringing the total to 2,500. The project would also include a 2,030-car parking garage, an upscale restaurant, a spa, fitness center, and larger outdoor area with two swimming pools.
