WRONG-WAY DRIVER, SUSPECTED OF DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE, CAUSES HEAD-ON CRASH ON I-8 IN LA MESA

March 26, 2020 (La Mesa) – An SUV traveling the wrong-way on Interstate 8 just east of 70th Street in La Mesa struck a red BMW head-one shortly before midnight last night. Both motorists sustained major life-threatening injuries and were transported to Sharp Memorial Hospital in San Diego.
 
According to California Highway Patrol Officer Travis Garrow, the CHP began getting calls at 11:56 p.m. reporting the SUV traveling west in the eastbound lanes of I-8.  Two minutes later, witnesses reported a head-on collision.

NATIVE RUNNERS SAVE 2 WOMEN TRAPPED IN VEHICLE AFTER CRASH NEAR IN-KO-PAH, BUT A THIRD VICTIM DIES

June 14, 2019 (In-Ko-Pah) – Native Americans running from the Fort Yuma Indian reservation in Arizona to the Sycuan reservation in San Diego’s East County, a 150 mile journey, sought  to draw attention to the plight of missing and murdered sovereign Native American women. On Friday morning, they wound up saving the lives of two women whose vehicle plunged off of I-8 east  into a rugged canyon.

TRAFFIC ALERT: FATALITY CRASH CLOGS I-8 WEST

 

Update May 18, 2018: Sajjad Hameed Ismael, 20, driver of 2001 Toyota, has been charged with felony hit and run causing death/injury, vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence, reckless driving, and driving with a suspended license. He was also booked on outstanding warrants.

East County Wildfire and Emergency Alerts

May 17, 2018 (San Diego) -- Four lanes of Interstate 8 West at Waring Road in the College area are expected to remain closed this evening for investigation and clean-up following a fatality crash. The multi-vehicle collision that occurred this afternoon killed a passenger in a Toyota Avalon and has prompted a SIG Alert.

According to the Cailfornia  Highway Patrol, the Avalon driver struck a slow-moving vehicle and veered onto a hill, struck several trees and then rolled back down onto the freeway.

MOTOROST KILLED AFTER VEHICLE BREAKS DOWN IN LA MESA

August 19, 2015 (La Mesa)—An 88-year-old man was struck and killed after his pickup truck broke down in La Mesa Monday afternoon.  The victim, Reynaldo Nava of Coronado, had pulled his disabled vehicle onto a section of land between I-8 and State Route 125.

MOTORCYCLIST INJURED IN CRASH ON I-8 AT 125

October 22, 2013 (La Mesa) – A motorcyclist suffered a fractured arm and abrasions when he was struck from behind in a three-vehicle collision at 3:43 p.m. today at the junction of Interstate 8 and State Route 94.

According to the CHP, an Acura Integra driven by a 21-year-old from Spring Valley traveling westbound on I-8 was attempting to take a transition road to southbound 125 when traffic came to an abrupt stop. The driver swerved and skidded into the next lane, striking a Honda Magna motorcycle from behind and ejecting its driver onto the roadway.  The Acura also struck a Suburban driven by a 59-year-old Bonita man.

SIG ALERT ISSUED ON I-8 NEAR COLLLEGE

April 6,2012 (San Diego) –California Highway Patrol has issued a SIG ALERT on I-8 eastbound at College Avenue due to a multi-vehicle pile-up  involving six to eight vehicles.  Alternate routes are advised for what is expected to be a long-term cleanup.

10-CAR PILE-UP FROM PAIR OF ACCIDENTS ON I-8 NEAR MT. HELIX

November 7, 2011 (San Diego's East County) - At least 10 vehicles are now involved in multiple crashes on I-8 West near the Severin/Fuerte and Grossmont exits at the boundary of La Mesa and El Cajon. Those exits serve the Mt. Helix and Grossmont High School areas.

I-8 EAST CLOSED AT BUCKMAN SPRINGS


April 28, 2011 (Buckman Springs) – A driver is trapped in a vehicle following a rollover accident on I-8 east at Buckman Springs near the Border Patrol checkpoint as of 12:48 p.m. , CHP and IPN report. The roadway is closed due to debris and am ambulance is en route, along with Border Patrol.

RESCUE IN PROGRESS: I-8 NEAR HIGHWAY 79

Update 10:25 p.m.: CHP reports only minor injury in this accident, which is now cleared.
February 18, 2011 (San Diego’s East County) – A Ford vehicle has plunged 200 feet over the side and rolled down into a canyon after losing control on rain-slicked I-8 just east of Highway 79. According to California Highway Patrol’s website, at least one person is trapped inside.

A rescue effort is in progress, involving 200 feet of cable down the steep side of the canyon.

FATALITY CRASH ON I-8 SNARLED RUSH HOUR COMMUTE

 

Update November 4, 2010:  The San Diego Medical Examiner’s office has identified Sergio Chan Mora, 54, as the deceased. His place of residence is unknown. According to witnesses, the driver of a Ford Explorer made an illegal u-turn on eastbound I-8 and struck Mora, who was unable to avoid the collision.

November 1, 2010 (Alpine) – I-8 east was shut down and a Sig Alert issued following a fatality accident on the freeway just west of Harbison Canyon late this afternoon, as ECM’s Viejas Wildfire & Emergency alerts informed subscribers earlier today. The rollover collision involved a white van and a second vehicle, with several parties trapped and requiring extrication. Smoke from one of the vehicles was doused with a fire extinguisher.

BRIDGE JUMPER, ACCIDENTS SNARL EVENING COMMUTE

 

July 14, 2010 (San Diego's East County) --A woman is distraught and threatening to jump off a bridge over Eastbound highway 54 near the 805 junction, Incident Page Network reported at 6:05 p.m.   

 

Traffic is also slow on westbound I-8 due to two major accidents, including a rollover at Fairmont where a vehicle rolled down an embankment, forcing a road closure.  A second accident has occured near College Avenue.
