FIRE AT CTC TOWING IN LAKESIDE KNOCKED DOWN BY A MULTI-AGENCY RESPONSE

February 28, 2013 (Flinn Springs)--CTC Towing at 15275 Olde Highway 80 suffered a fire of unknown origin on Tuesday. The fire started before 1 p.m., according to the Lakeside Fire Protection District, and drew a multiagency response, including both San Diego City Fire Department HAZMAT and County HAZMAT.

ARSON SUSPECTED IN LAKESIDE FIRE

January 2, 2013 (Lakeside) – A 74-year-old woman and her daughter have been hospitalized for treatment of injuries after a fire at their home at 13265 Lakeview Granada in Lakeside yesterday.  Sheriff’s deputies arrived at 4:26 p.m. to assist firefighters from the Lakeside Fire Department at the fully engulfed structure fire.

“The elderly woman told deputies her daughter had intentionally set the fire. Deputies detained the adult suspect, pending the investigation,” said  Sergeant Curt Goldberg with the San Diego Sheriff.  The mother also told a dispatcher that her daughter set the blaze deliberately.

WILDFIRE DOUSED NEAR HOMES IN LAKESIDE

July 12, 2012 (Lakeside) – A brush fire briefly threatened homes at I-8 and Los Coches Road near in Lakeside early this afternoon.  Thanks to a full wildland fire response, the blaze was extinguished in about 20 minutes. 

"As I traveled up Los Coches Road, I spotted flames and smoke near a housing track. I called 911 and they dispatched fire crews.  Within 5 minutes  fire engine crews were on the scene," said ECM photographer Billy Ortiz, who shot this dramatic video as firefighters battled the blaze and concerned residents looked on.

NEW FIRE IN EL MONTE VALLEY

June 10, 2012 (Lakeside) – San Diego County’s third wildfire in one day has charred several acres in El Monte Valley on the north side of Lake Jennings near El Monte Park. No structures are threatened, according to Cal Fire.

WILDFIRE IN LAKESIDE

 

Update June 10, 2012 6 p.m. - The Horse fire has been stopped at 12 acres, Lakeside Fire Chief Andy Parr told ECM.  Fixed wing aircraft and helicopters were used to battle the blaze under a unified command with Cal-Fire. No homes were lost, Chief Parr confirmed.

May 8, 2012 (Lakeside) – The Sheriff’s Bomb and Arson squad has been called to the scene of a house fire in the 11000 block of Lakeside Avenue to investigate the cause of the blaze, the Sheriff’s Department has confirmed.

GARAGE FIRE IN LAKESIDE

 Update 8:35 p.m.: The fire is now knocked down and residents are cleared to return to their residences.

January 7, 2012 (Lakeside)--Firefighters are on the scene of a garage fire  at 12097 Gay Rio Drive in Lakeside.  "The fire is putting up a lot of smoke and they're getting people out of the houses nearby," ECM photographer Dennis Richardson told ECM.

One person is reportedly suffering smoke inhalation and will be transported to a local hospital.

FORWARD SPREAD OF WILDCAT CANYON FIRE STOPPED AT 75 ACRES

 

Update 9 p.m. - The forward spread of the fire was stopped at 75 acres (downgraded from earlier estimates on acreage). A total of ten engines, 4 fire crews, 2 airtankers, 3 helicopters, 1 bulldozer, 2 water tenders, 3 Chief Officers and 100 firefighters have worked to battle the blaze, Cal-Fire reports.

BRUSH FIRE NEAR BARONA HALTED AT 4 ACRES

 Update 12:36 p.m.:  Spread of the Bullpen Fire has been stopped at four acres.  The Incident Commander has released the airtankers, 1 helicopter, and the bulldozer.  Firefighters will remain on scene mopping up hot spots.  One minor injury to a firefighter, a bee sting, was reported.

 

 

August 20, 2011 (Lakeside)CAL FIRE is on scene of a two-acre brush fire near 1154 Bullpen Street, near the community of Barona (TB Map 1193 A4). Currently there are 5 engines, 2 fire crews, 2 helicopters, 2 airtankers, 1 bulldozer, 1 chief officer (75 firefighters).

 

The fire was reported at 11:49 and the cause is under investigation.

June 11, 2011 (San Diego’s East County) – A brush fire that started near 12th and H Streets in Ramona charred two acres, but was swiftly extinguished. In addition, a spot fire burned a 30 x 30 foot section off Wildcat Canyon Road at the 10-mile marker in Lakeside this morning, Cal-Fire reports.

5-ACRE FIRE IN LAKESIDE

 

May 26, 2011 (Lakeside) – Cal-Fire, working in unified command with Lakeside Fire Protection District, has halted the spread of a 5-acre fire burning south of the San Vicente Reservoir near the Morena gate in Lakeside.

 

Ten engines, two fire crews, a helicopter, an air tanker, bulldozer and water tender have helped battle the blaze. Access was limited due to construction in the area, however the situation is under control and a request for a second air tanker has been cancelled.

FIRE DAMAGES SELF-STORAGE FACILITY IN LAKESIDE

 

March 10, 2011 (Lakeside) -- Lakeside Fire Department responded to a reported multi-family residential structure fire at 8810 Winter Gardens Blvd at 38 minutes past midnight. Units from El Cajon and Santee also responded, along with medics. Heartland Fire Dispatch reported to the responding units en route that the fire was located in the storage units in front of the Mountain View apartments.

PARAGLIDER'S ROUGH LANDING RESULTS IN SPINAL INJURY

 

November 27, 2010 (Lakeside) – Lakeside Fire Protection District received a report of a paraglider that had experienced a rough landing at the Blossom Valley Glider Port, resulting in injuries to the pilot. A rescue response was dispatched, including one structural engine, one rescue unit , an ALS ambulance, and Battalion Chief Lawler.

LAKESIDE FIREFIGHTERS DOUSE CAR FIRE

 

November 12, 2010 (Lakeside)--The Engine 3 crew from Lakeside's Lake Jennings fire station (fs3) responded to a vehicle fire in the 13000 block of Highway 8 Business Wednesday night. Engineer Chris Downing had little trouble finding the location of the fire as it was putting up a large, black smoke column visible from a distance. Luckily, the vehicle's driver had stopped in the middle of a parking lot with no other vehicles or structures in close proximity, Lakeside Fire reports.

August 23, 2010 (San Diego’s East County) –The Monte Fire, which started Saturday at 1 p.m. in the El Monte Park area of Lakeside, is now 75% contained. Full containment is expected by 6 p.m. today, according to the Southern California Interagency incident management team.
 

El Monte Road at Lake Jennings Road remains closed today, along with El Capitan Reservoir and El Monte Park. Cause remains under investigation.

MONTE FIRE NOW 60% CONTAINED

August 22, 2010 (Lakeside) 8:30 p.m. – Asked for an update on the Monte Fire, U.S. Forest Service public information officer Kate Kramer had good news.

 

“We’re doing really well,” she said, adding that the fire has been held to 1,027 acres. “We’ve been working hard on getting a line about it, and we expect full containment by 6 p.m. tomorrow.”

DRAMATIC RESCUE DETAILS REVEALED

August 21, 2010 (Lakeside) -- As East County Magazine reported earlier, a San Diego Sheriff's helicopter rescued two people trapped on the face of El Capitan (El Cajon Mountain) when the fast-moving Monte fire encroached below them.

 

Now the Sheriff and Cal-Fire have released details of the harrowing ordeal, revealing how two deputies risked their own lives to save others.  They narrowly escaped, as flames burned so close that one rescuer leaped onto a landing skid and hung on as the chopper descended 3,675 feet to the valley floor.

EL MONTE FIRE 10% CONTAINED, FORWARD SPREAD STOPPED

August 21, 2010 (Lakeside) 9:05 p.m. --“Barring anything else happening it looks like it is contained for the night,” Chief August Ghio, head of the San Diego Fire Chiefs Association informed East County Magazine at 8:45 p.m. The fire which began in the El Monte Valley early this afternoon is more than 2,000 acres, but forward spread has been halted, he confirmed.

The U.S. Forest Service is taking over management of the fire, which is now burning in the Cleveland National Forest.

August 21, 2010 (Lakeside) 5:15 p.m. – Firefighters are expected to work through the night battling a blaze that Cal-Fire now estimates at 2,000 acres, with 5-10% containment. (Note: Cal-Fire issued a correction of an earlier release, which had indicated 3,000 acres.)

 

"The fire went right up El Cap to where one of the towers is to be located," Candy Barra-Jenkins said of the planned Sunrise Powerlink line. "All the pictures I took of the planes and helicopters are where the transmission line would be. This fire would have been much worse if the transmission line were here." ROCK CLIMBERS RESCUED AS FIRE SWELLS TO 1,500 ACRES IN EL MONTE VALLEY

August 21, 2010 (Lakeside) – 2:50 p.m. – Two rock climbers were trapped 1,500 feet up the side of El Capitan, dangling on the sheer rock face in El Monte Valley with a wildfire burning toward him.  Moments ago, Sheriff's Lieutenant Munsey informed ECM that the climber has been rescued.  Cal-Fire reports that a total of 10 people have been evacuated via helicopter, including 8 residents and the two climbers.

August 21, 2010 (Lakeside) 1:55 p.m. - The fire in El Monte Valley is now 100 acres, actively burning to the north, into steep terrain, away from structures,  Cal-Fire's Roxanne Provaznik reports. 

 

ECM photographer Dennis Richardson, on the scene, reports the fire is burning up the face of El Capitan. A radio scanner report indicated that hikers on a trail expressed concerns about becoming trapped.

July 30, 2010 (Lakeside)--An arrest has been made in connection with a series of recent vegetation fires in the Lakeside area. The most recent fire occurred last night  near I-8 and Los Coches Road at approximately 10:45 pm. Fire crews were able to quickly extinguish the fire; there was no damage to structures and no one was injured.

July 28, 2010 (Lakeside) – A brush fire charred several acres near Rocky Lane and San Vicente Avenue this evening, briefly threatening several homes including one that had previously burned and was rebuild following the 2003 Cedar Fire. Flames came with 50 feet of homes before firefighters contained the blaze.
