October 22, 2011 (San Diego’s East County) – The San Diego County Farm Bureau’s (SDCFB) board of directors has selected Jeff Rossman, executive chef/owner of Terra American Bistro in the East College area of San Diego, as the first recipient of the SD Grown 365 Award.

Rossman received the honor for his enduring dedication to supporting local growers and for advancing the steadily expanding Grown in San Diego movement in the community.

He’ll be presented with the designation during the annual Farmer of the Year Dinner November 17, 6 p.m., at the California Center for the Arts, Escondido.

“The selection committee took great care in selecting the inaugural recipient of the San Diego Grown 365 Award,” said Eric Larson, executive director of the Bureau. “Jeff Rossman would have likely been a candidate for either his restaurant work or for his cookbook. When you put the two together, the selection was rather easy.”

The award is one of two new designations – the second being the Farm Bureau Service Award -- joining two longer running annual awards: Farmer of the Year and Friend of Agriculture.

“Receiving this award is a great honor,” said Rossman, whose cooking philosophy embraces locally grown and humanely raised. “It is my hope that this newly created designation makes it clear to restaurateurs and other individuals that serving locally grown produce is not an en vogue trend, but rather an enduring decision that’s good for farmers, restaurateurs and our patrons.”

Rossman’s support of local growers is not only expressed via the kitchen at Terra American Bistro, but also in his cookbook “From Terra’s Table: New American Food Fresh From Southern California’s Organic Farms” (Chefs Press, 2010). In this award-winning book, he highlights the stories of the local growers and artisans from which he sources and outlines resources for food activism and advocacy.

Helmed by Executive Chef Jeff Rossman, Terra American Bistro is New American farm-to-table restaurant in San Diego’s East College area. Rossman’s seasonal menu reflects his ties to local growers who produce fresh, organic fruits and vegetables and ranchers who practice humane animal husbandry. The atmosphere is casual and relaxed, without the pretentiousness of fine dining, yet the food is indicative of fine dining. Terra also offers cuisine for private parties, events and banquets.
