TRIBES GATHER FOR 22ND ANNUAL POW-WOW AT SYCUAN SEPT. 9-11

September 7, 2011 (El Cajon) – Helping keep tribal traditions alive, the annual pow-wow on the Sycuan Reservation this weekend will offer $125,000 in prize money for winning competitors. Top prizes will be awarded in the drum/singing contest, including an $8,000 first prize. Men and women, children, teens and adults will vie for additional prizes including bird dancing and bird singing. Each dance has its own special significant with traditional apparel, from buckskin to jingle dresses.

 

A grand entry processional on Friday, Saturday and Sunday will be held at 1 p.m. Gourd dancing will be held from 7-8 p.m. on Friday and from 12-1 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Peon games will be held Friday and Saturday evening from dusk to dawn. Other highlights include Kumeyaay bird singing and dancing exhibitions and competitions and inter-tribal dances. Admission and parking are free.
 

Visitors may shop for hand-crafted arts and crafts, such as Native American jewelry, blankets, moccasins, carvings, flutes, and more. Foods including traditional Native American fry breads will be available for purchase. There are also several restaurants available in the adjacent Sycuan Casino.
 

The event will be held at the Sycuan pow-wow grounds, located behind to the Sycuan Casino at 5459 Dehesa Road on the Sycuan Reservation in El Cajon.
