July 2, 2016 (San Diego) – The Padres narrowly escaped the jaws of a comeback defeat against the Yankees last night. Their job tonight was to come away with the win at a much larger margin. Ivan Nova started on the hill for the Bombers against Drew Pomeranz for the Padres.
Unlike last night, this was an incredibly boring game. Nothing happened until the sixth when Starlin Castro grounded out, scoring Jacoby Ellsbury and giving the Yankees a 1-0 lead.
The Padres tied the game at one on Matt Kemp’s double in their half of the sixth after Dellin Betances relieved Nova that scored National League Player of the Month for June, Wil Myers.
The game remained tied until the bottom of the ninth when who else but two-time walk-off hero Melvin Upton Jr. homered to give the Padres the win, 2-1 and save the game from going to extra innings. That's Upton Jr.'s third walk-off home run of the season.
The Pads and Yanks series finale will be tomorrow afternoon at 1:40 p.m. The Padres will see if they can finally get their first sweep.
Transaction News:
