August 22, 2016 (San Diego) - The Chicago Cubs are in town for what promises to be a fun series pitching-wise. Jon Lester got the start tonight against Edwin Jackson.
He got through the first inning, but in the second, Addison Russell, who's been having an incredible season, launched his 18th home run and the Cubs led 1-0.
In the third, Russell made it happen again with a sac fly that scored Dexter Fowler and the Cubs went up 2-0.
In the fifth, University of San Diego alum Kris Bryant hit a solo homer, tying Nolan Arenado for the National League home run lead at 32 and the Cubs went up 3-0. Jason Heyward smashed a two-run homer to right field and the Cubs led 5-0.
The Padres did get a run back on a wild pitch that scored Alex Dickerson to make the score 5-1, but that would be all the Padres could manage as the Cubs take game one 5-1.
Game two is tomorrow at 7:10 p.m. Ace pitcher Jake Arrieta will start for the Cubs.
Transaction news:
- Luis Sardinas recalled from El Paso
- Jabari Blash placed on 15-day DL retroactive to August 19 with a sprained left middle finger
