June 25, 2010 (San Diego) – It doesn’t get much closer than this. Yesterday, Mary Salas' lead over Juan Vargas had evaporated to a single vote.  Today, in the hotly contested Democratic primary for the 40th State Senate District,Vargas pulled into the lead by a six vote margin with 24,079 votes to Salas' 24,073. But this horse race isn’t over yet, with thousands of votes yet to be tallied in a race spanning three separate counties.

Vargas picked up 66 new votes in San Diego today, versus 59 for Salas. San Diego has about 750 more absentee and provisional ballots to count.  Imperial and Riverside Counties did not release new results today.

Riverside County has 12,000 uncounted ballots caught up in a Postal Service glitch, meaning a judge will have to decide whether they will be counted or not, according to the conservative website San Diego Rostra, which noted, “So if you like a good Rodeo/Destruction Derby, stay tuned…”

Recounts appear likely in all three counties with razor-thin leads in each. Last Democrat standing after all votes are in will wind up facing Republican Brian Hendry in the fall election.

Next time you think your vote doesn’t count, think again – any one voter bringing a few friends or neighbors to the polls may well have made the difference in this race.
