February 2, 2012 (El Cajon)—The driver of a KSON radio station vehicle smelled smoke while sitting in traffic yesterday in downtown El Cajon. Looking behind his seat, he saw flames, quickly exited the vehicle and called 911 shortly before 2 p.m. yesterday.

A Heartland Fire & Rescue engine from El Cajon responded to reports of the vehicle fire on North Magnolia Avenue, just north of East Main Street.  Fortunately the nearest fire station was just a block away and fire crews were on scene within moments of being dispatched. The arriving crew found the front seat passenger area fully involved. The fire was extinguished in less than 10 minutes, but the vehicle sustained significant damage.

El Cajon Police temporarily closed the southbound lanes of North Magnolia between East Main and Civic Center Way, re-routing traffic until the van could be towed away.  There were no injuries reported. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
