WATCH FINE PRINT ON OFFER OF “FREE” MONTH TRASH SERVICE SERVICE

June 25, 2009 (Deerhorn Valley) – Waste Management has sent a notice to customers offering a free month’s service to customers who sign and return a letter agreement mailed to residents asking help to“update our records”—but there’s a big catch.

“Read the fine print on the back,” warns Rob Deason, webmaster for www.deerhornvalley.net , a community website in East County. “You will be signing a 3 YEAR CONTRACT,” he stated in an e-mail sent to East Count Magazine and area residents with a copy of the notice attached. Moreover, if you terminate the agreement before 36 months, you will be obligated to pay Waste Management “liquidated damages” of three times the amount of your monthly charge, unless you move out of the company’s service area.

With that wording, even if you move to a smaller home in the same service area, you could still be on the hook for hefty bills on your old residence. (The company does, however, reserve the right to revoke your service if you don’t pay your bill.)

Customers are not required to sign the agreement—so think twice before accepting that “free” month’s service.
