July 24, 2016 (El Cajon) – From classic cruises to an El Cajon Walks! Meet-up group, museum exhibits, musicals and more, there’s a lot happening this month and next in El Cajon. Plus, nominations are being sought for the Women in Leadership and Veteran of the Year awards.

Custom Creations at the Next Cajon Classic Cruise Car Show

The theme is “Custom Creations” at the next Cajon Classic Cruise car show on July 27 in Downtown El Cajon! See classic vehicles, enjoy great food, entertainment, and visit the vendors. This popular event takes place on East Main Street between Magnolia Avenue and Claydelle Avenue.  This fun weekly event, hosted by the Downtown Business Partners, continues every Wednesday night through October 26, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.  For more information, please call (619) 334-3000 or visit www.downtownelcajon.com.

Stop By El Cajon Farmers’ Market Every Thursday Afternoon

You’ll find fresh vegetables and more at El Cajon Farmers’ Market every Thursday at the Prescott Promenade, located at 201 E. Main Street.  Hours are from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.  The Farmers’ Market offers a wide variety of fresh, locally-grown fruits and vegetables, fresh baked bread, vendors and more. El Cajon Walks! Meet-up Group

If you want to enjoy the beautiful weather, explore your neighborhood and meet some new friends - then this group is for you!  Join this group for fun, safe walks around El Cajon and discover how to get to local destinations safely with great people, while building your community. Specific walking routes will be tailored to the abilities and interests of the group, but will stay in El Cajon. Walks will be scheduled on a monthly basis on Thursday afternoons, but may vary slightly to fit the group’s needs.  Bring water, wear comfortable walking shoes, and bring your sunglasses.  El Cajon Walks!  Choose from these upcoming walks:

  • Explore some of the neighborhoods in El Cajon together with a stroll starting at John F. Kennedy Park on Wednesday, July 27 at 5:00 p.m.  Meet in front of the Kennedy Recreation Center, located at 1675 East Madison Avenue in El Cajon. 
  • This afternoon walk begins at the Prescott Promenade on Wednesday, August 17, at 5:00 p.m.  The Promenade is located at 201 East Main Street, in Downtown El Cajon.  Meet at the flagpole.

El Cajon Branch Hosts Legends Exhibit

Each year, San Diego Legends are celebrated at different locations all around San Diego County. San Diego Legends is an annual recognition of San Diego Elders who lead by example. Their lives are a testament to the value of hard work, spiritual integrity, and commitment to others.  The Legends art pieces will be on exhibit at the El Cajon Library Branch, at 201 E Douglas Avenue, now through August 1. Nominate a Female Leader for the Women in Leadership Luncheon

The San Diego East County Chamber of Commerce is now accepting nominations for the 14th Annual Women in Leadership Luncheon due by Friday, August 12th. These awards provide an opportunity for any individual or organization to honor a special woman who has made an impact in the San Diego community. The Keynote Speaker for this year's WILL awards is Dionne Thomas a dynamic leader and role model in the wellness community with a passion to make fitness fun. ALL nominees will be recognized at the luncheon held at the Town & Country Resort Hotel on Friday, September 16th, 2016. Nomination forms can be found on the website at www.eastcountychamber.org.

Wieghorst Museum Art Show Continues

The Wieghorst Museum Foundation invites you to the “Moments in Time” art show, from now through August 22.  See the beautiful artwork of Grace Schlesier, Gloria Chadwick, Dennis Torzeski, Denise Rich, Millie Shaw, and Debbie Hughbanks.  The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00p.m.  and located at 131 Rea Avenue in El Cajon.  For more information, please call (619) 590-3431.

Nominations Now Being Accepted for Veteran of the Year Award

The City of El Cajon Veterans Commission presents a “Veteran of the Year” Award, recognizing those who go above and beyond in serving their community through their leadership abilities and/or community service in El Cajon, making a big impact on those they serve.

Final selections will be based on dedication, commitment, and demonstrated impact of those served.  If you see, hear, or know of a veteran who has gone the extra mile to improve the quality of life in the community, please take this opportunity to acknowledge and reward that effort.

Award Criteria:

The following criteria are required for an individual to receive this special award:

•Been honorably discharged from the U.S. Military or National Guard

•City of El Cajon resident

•Made significant contributions to the community since their discharge

•Not a current Veterans Commissioner

Note: Honorable discharge supporting documentation will be required as part of the application.

Nomination and Selection Process: To nominate someone, complete a nomination form and return it to the City of El Cajon Recreation Department. Please visit http://tinyurl.com/VeteranAward to download the nomination form.  Nominations will be accepted now through September 15, 2016.

The Veterans Commission will make a final selection and notify the award recipient and his/her nominators by the last week in October. The individual selected for this award will be recognized on November 11, 2016, during the Veterans Day Celebration at the Veterans Memorial in front of City Hall.  He/she will also be presented with a “Veteran of the Year” award plaque and proclamation during an El Cajon City Council Meeting in December.  Additionally, a perpetual plaque will be displayed in the lobby at City Hall and a press release showcasing the award recipient will be distributed to all local media.  For more information, please contact the City of El Cajon Recreation Department at (619) 441-1754.

Grossmont College Theater - 80 DAYS! A New Musical

See “Around the World in 80 Days,” a timeless tale of amazing adventures as Phileas Fogg attempts to circumnavigate the globe in less than 80 days in order to win a sizeable wager.  The play is based on the novel Around the World in 80 Days by Jules Verne.  Dates for the production are July 28, 29 & 30, and August 4 & 5 at 7:30 p.m., and July 29 & 30, and August 4, 5 & 6 at 2:00 pm. Tickets are on Sale NOW!  General tickets are $15, military and seniors are $12, and students with GCCCD I.D. are $10.  Tickets can be purchased by calling the Stagehouse Box Office at (619) 644-7234, or purchased one hour prior to each performance.

The box office is located in building 22A, room 200-A1, and on line at www.grossmont.edu/theatrebrochure. Grossmont College’s Stagehouse Theatre is located in building 21, room 247, located in the back of parking lot #1.  Free parking permits are available at the Box Office.

Summer Fun! The Summer Recreation Guide Is Available Online!

The City of El Cajon Recreation Guide is available online at www.elcajonrec.org.  There are 14 camps throughout the summer, now through August 5.  Summer classes are very popular - register now before classes fill up!  Pick up a copy of the summer recreation guide at any of the El Cajon Recreation centers, local libraries and in the lobbies of City Hall and the El Cajon Police Station. Living a Fairy Tale Camp

Join the adventure into the land of fairytales where every princess, prince, dragon, elf and fairytale creature, ages 5 - 10, will delight in dance and music, fairytale arts and crafts, and games with friends.  Camp is August 1 - 5 at Hillside Community Center, 840 Buena Terrace, from 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon.  The fee is $70 for residents and $85 non-residents.  Register at www.elcajonrec.org or at any recreation center during operational hours.  For more information, call (619) 441-1674.

Do You Want to Dance?

Be a shining star at the City of El Cajon Recreation Department’s Dance Camp, August 1 - 5. This camp, for all ages 7 - 15, will be held at Renette Recreation Center, 935 S. Emerald Avenue, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.  Learn the latest dance moves, enjoy crafts and make new friends. The fee is $95 for residents and $110 for non-residents. Summer Movie in The Park

On Friday, August 5, enjoy “Summer Movies in The Park!” The El Cajon Recreation Department will be offering a free summer movie at Renette Park, featuring the movie “Inside Out” beginning at dusk.  Bring a picnic and enjoy pre-event activities at 6:00 p.m.  Renette Park is located at 935 Emerald Avenue in El Cajon. August 13 - The 39th Annual Haute With Heart Fashion Show Benefiting St. Madeleine Sophie’s Center.  The theme is “Empowerment Is Golden!  Haute with a Heart Fashion Show and Luncheon features a fashion show produced by Fashion Forward – Leonard Simpson with a special performance by the students.  This popular annual event is from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Hilton San Diego Bay Front Hotel, located at 1 Park Boulevard in San Diego.  Festivities include fabulous boutique shopping, traditional live and silent auctions, and opportunity drawings. Proceeds raised benefit the unique programs St. Madeleine Sophie’s Center for over 400 adults with developmental disabilities.  This event will also include a delicious luncheon and free parking.  Registration, a silent auction, and boutique shopping opens at 10:00 a.m.  Tickets are $125 per person.  For more information or tickets, please visit www.stmsc.org, or call (619) 442-5129, ext. 115.
