June 10, 2016 (Denver) – After a needed day off, the Padres went back to work tonight against the NL West rival Colorado Rockies.  Andrew Cashner started for the Padres against Jon Gray for Colorado.  Cashner left the game early with a stiff neck and Luis Perdomo took his place.  This was a game that will go down in Padres' history.

The Padres didn’t miss Nolan Arenado.  He hit a two-run homer in the first, giving the Rockies a 2-0 lead.

Jon Jay grounded out in the third, scoring Alexei Ramirez and the Rockies’ lead was cut to 2-1.  Wil Myers finished the job with a sacrifice fly, scoring Perdomo (who had his first major league hit tonight) and tying the game.

Melvin Upton Jr. hit a solo homer in the third to give the Padres the lead, but Carlos Gonzalez scored on an error in the Rockies’ half to tie the game at three.  Nick Hundley singled and drove in Trevor Story and the Rockies reclaimed the lead, 4-3.

It stayed quiet for the rest of the game, but Mark Reynolds popped a ball up to left that neither Ramirez nor Upton Jr. could catch.  It scored Story and the Rockies took a two-run lead, 5-3.

Jay hit a ground rule double in the ninth that scored Ramirez and brought the Padres to within one and then you’re not going to believe what I tell you.  Seriously, when you read this, you’re going to ask yourself “are you sure you’re covering the Padres?  This is the Padres you’re talking about, right?” But listen:  Myers hit a home run.  Not just any home run.  A three-run home run that gave the Padres a 7-5 lead.  In the ninth.  The Padres led 7-5 with one inning left to go.  The Rockies couldn’t get the third out and Myers crushed a three-run home run and the Padres took a 7-5 lead.  It sounds like a fairy tale.  But it actually happened.

The Padres would go on to win the game 7-5 and take game one.  They and the Rockies will play a matinee game tomorrow at 1:10 p.m.  Erik Johnson will make his Padres debut on the hill tomorrow against Tyler Chatwood for Colorado.
