Update May 18, 2012 (8 a.m.) -- The fire is now 60% contained at 150 acres on the U.S. side, with full contained expected by tonight and full control by tomorrow night, according to Cal-Fire's Roxanne Provaznik.
Currently there are 20 engines, 8 fire crews, 4 water tenders, 1 air tanker, and 4 helicopters assigned to fight the fire.
Update May 17, 2012 7 p.m. -- "Due to unexpected gusty winds the Border #6 Fire jumped our containment lines," said Roxanne Provaznik at Cal-Fire. The fire is now 10% contained. Winds have once again diminished and the fire's spread has slowed.
Cooler temperatures and less winds are expected this evening; firefighters will be on the incident all night. There is still no threat to structures.
May 17, 2012 (San Diego’s East County) –The wind has kicked up, fueling a fire that began in Mexico to more than 900 acres---including 150 acres on the U.S. side of the border.
“It’s definitely growing,” Mike Mohler at Cal-Fire told ECM at 5:10 p.m. He estimated wind speed at 50 mph and said the fire, currently in Jewel Valley, is burning in a northwest direction. “I just talked to our division chief on the scene. He says we will be out there for at least a couple of days,” he said.
Cause of the blaze is not yet known.
