Nothing but the truth!

January 3, 2012 (San Diego)--Watching TV yesterday, I learned that both the Mayan  and Chinese Calendar predict the world will end sometime this year. I hope to not check out until I have exhausted my “To Do” list.

This particular TV program tried to relate various historical events  With the 64-bit Chinese I-Ching, or the Mayan calendar itself. Personally, this sort of nonsense is right up there with the Nazca lines  being a celestial spaceship landing zone.

Then there are the right-wing Neo-Christian folks who think Jesus is going to show up in a Space Ship and whisk 44,000 Chosen folks off to paradise.

All of these idiots have one thing in common. They refuse to acknowledge that our problems are our fault.  Until we change our political, economic and social structures to meet the real problems we face we cannot rely on magical thinking to fix things.

We are polluting the earth. We are running out of fossil fuels. We are overpopulating the planet.  We spend too much on weapons  and not enough on health care.  Our Congress is locked in  Partisan poison politics and currently in non-functional. The rich are ripping off the poor and blaming the poor for “class warfare.” Pogo was right. We are our own worst enemy.

As we start the  New Year let’s not wish for magical solutions.  Let’s pray we have the patience and good sense to cooperate.  If work together, we can survive. If we continue with racial, ethnic, political and national prejudices we will certainly blow ourselves up.
