August 8, 2018 (El Cajon) — A witness helped save an El Cajon Police officer today after a man attacked the officer with a hammer.

Police had been called to a Jack-in-the-Box regarding Robert Dille, 30, who was reportedly smashing windows and threatening people with a hammer. Officers found Dille a few blocks away at West Main Street and Van Houten around 11:20 a.m.

ECPD tweeted that officers tried to use a stun gun to subdue the suspect, but it wasn’t effective and the suspect then struck one of the officers multiple times in the head.

According to ECM news partner 10 news, a witness grabbed the suspect in a choke hold to help the officer under attack.

Officers arrested Dille and a female companion.

The officer, whose name has not been released, was transported to a hospital and treated for a head injury, then released.
