January 3, 2024 (La Mesa) — An affordable housing development on city-owned land at the site of the former police  station in downtown La Mesa is expected to be completed later this year.  You can now sign up on an interest list to received leasing events information this summer.

Renters must have a household income between $29,200 and $67,200, which is 30% to 70% of the area’s $97,000 median income. Rents will range from $685 to $1,591 per month.

The 147-apartment community is a transit-oriented development, close to bus stops, a trolley station and many downtown businesses.

Construction began in January 2023 and is expected to be completed in fall or winter of 2024.

The city’s social media posts announcing the sign-up list for affordable housing complex at 8181 Allison Ave. drew mixed reactions.

Some welcomed the news and shared it with others. “Thank you - I have shared it on San Diego Adjunct Faculty Association's FB page. We are all part time instructors at the community colleges,” Carlynne Albee wrote.

Others felt the income threshold is still too high for people on fixed incomes, such as seniors and the disabled.  Deanna Polk stated, “Affordable? According to an artificially elevated market? Those of us on Social Security need affordable. This is just a market ploy...”

Some objected to high-rise living.  Barbie Lawrence wrote, “Sorry, but I wouldn’t want to live in a place like that, even though I qualify. I hate all the high-density development...”

Tim Moore expressed concern that the project could exacerbate a shortage of parking downtown.

But the new project will offer opportunities and a place to call home for many seeking affordable options in San Diego, one of the nation’s highest-priced rental markets
