November 22, 2023 (San Diego’s East County) –The I-8 Pavement Replacement and Road Improvements Project from Viejas Creek to Pine Valley Creek is now 72% completed after 291 working days. Full completion expected next summer.
Below are details from CalTrans on upcoming work in late November and December.
Work planned from Nov. 22 to Dec. 12
Construction work continues on Stage 3 with most of the work taking place behind the concrete barriers between East Willows Road and SR-79/Japatul Valley Road.
Motorists should expect delays while traveling through this area. Semi-trucks and RV will slow down passenger vehicles through the single lane closure. Caltrans staff apologize for this inconvenience.
Crews expect to start pouring concrete on November 21. Once crews complete the concrete pour, motorists will see limited construction works as the concrete hardens. After the concrete hardens, crews will grind then stripe the lanes before opening to motorists in mid-January 2024.
Grinding of the pavement shoulders should start on December 11.
Reminder:
The hours for the on-call bicycle shuttle are 8 am to 4 pm, 7 days a week.
The on-call Tow Truck Service phone number is 619-478-5616.
This project is replacing the existing concrete (which has exceeded its life expectancy) with Continuously
Reinforced Concrete Pavement (CRCP), a continual, smooth-riding surface capable of withstanding the heaviest loads and the most adverse environmental conditions. The life span of CRCP pavement may be up to 70 years, far exceeding existing road surfaces.
The construction schedule is subject to change due to weather, traffic incidents, or other construction considerations. Travelers are reminded to follow the speed limit indicated in the construction zone, watch for highway workers and moving equipment, and be alert in the work zone.
