May 20, 2026 (San Diego) — The California State Senate has unanimously passed SB 1067, legislation authored by Senator Akilah Weber Pierson, M.D. to strengthen early identification of math learning challenges for students in kindergarten through second grade.
SB 1067 aims to ensure young students receive early math screening and support so learning gaps can be identified and addressed before they widen later in a child’s academic career.
“Early intervention is one of the most effective tools we have to help students succeed,” said Senator Weber Pierson. “When children struggle with foundational math skills and those challenges go unnoticed, it can impact their confidence and long-term academic outcomes. SB 1067 helps ensure students are identified early and connected to the support they need to thrive.”
Research continues to show that strong early math skills are closely linked to long-term academic achievement, graduation rates, and future career opportunities. By prioritizing early screening and intervention, SB 1067 seeks to give California students a stronger foundation for lifelong success.
SB 1067 passed the Senate with unanimous bipartisan support and now moves to the Assembly for further consideration.
Senator Akilah Weber Pierson, M.D. represents California’s 39th Senate District, which includes portions of San Diego County, the cities of Coronado, El Cajon, La Mesa, and Lemon Grove, as well as portions of the City of San Diego. Senator Weber Pierson is a board-certified OB/GYN and serves as the chair of the Senate Health Committee.
