DESTINATION EAST COUNTY: HOT AUGUST NIGHTS AND STAR-STUDDED SEPTEMBER EVENTS

July 31, 2023 (San Diego’s East County) -- August and September events coming up in San Diego’s East County will give you plenty to howl about – including tours at the California Wolf Center, National Night Out with local law enforcement agencies, Julian’s star fest, outdoor concerts in several communities, classic cruises, the Mt. Helix Food and Wine Festival, an X-Fest with extreme sports events, plus a concert by country music legend Crystal Gayle and a comedy show by Paula Poundstone.

NATIONAL NIGHT OUT AUGUST 1

National NIght Out is an annual event to foster closer relations between law enforcement and the community.  The Sheriff's Department will host National Night Out events at its stations and substations countywide. For details on each staton's event,  click here

El Cajon Police are celebrating the 40th anniversary of their National Night Out with a celebration at Parkway Plaza in the parking lot August 1 from 5 to 9 p.m.  It includes a fitness competition, offering participants the chance to showcase their strength and endurance as they challenge officers through obstacles. The event will feature a live band, Whiskey Ridge, with country music and line dancing. Athletes from San Diego Wave will be attending with a mini pitch setup to play in. Plus there will be arts and crafts for kids, a car show,and opportunities to meet first responders from multiple agencies.

WOLF TOURS AUGUST 6

California Wolf Center in Julian will host guided tours of their conservation facility to see resident wolves and learn about wolf conservation.

The one-hour tours provide unique experiences that are fun for all ages as you see critically endangered wild wolves.  The tours are by reservation only on August 6 at 10 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.  You can reserve online at

JULIAN STAR FEST AUGUST 11-13

The Julian Star Fest returns August 11th through the 13th .  

This year’s festivities include a free public star party on Saturday night, August 12th,  camping availability for tent and RV campers, astronomy games and crafts for kids,  exhibits by major telescope and accessory vendors, food and beverage vendors.

On Saturday only, there will also be a raffle for donated astronomy equipment plus  an optional behind-the-scenes tour of the world-famous Mount Laguna Observatory.

All proceeds from the event are used to help fund the San Diego Astronomy Association’s ongoing community educational efforts.

LEMON GROVE CONCERTS IN THE PARK THURSDAY THROUGH AUGUST 10

 The City of Lemon Grove invites you to Concerts in the Park each Thursday evening from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Berry Street Park on Mount Vernon Street in Lemon Grove.  The concerts run from June 29 through August 10. Bring a blanket or lawn chair along with your own picnic or barbecue. Alcohol is prohibited, and pets must be on leashes.

Afterwards, you can join local veterans for a half-pound burger lunch at the Lakeside VFW.

MT. HELIX FOOD AND WINE FESTIVAL AUGUST 19

You’re invited to don your cowboy boots and wrangle up the gang for the Mt. Helix Food and Wine Festival on the evening of August 19th.

This year’s  event features a Wild West theme, food and wine tasting from local restaurants and beverage companies, as well as artists, live and silent auctions, live music, sunset views from atop Mt. Helix. and dancing under the stars.

EL CAJON CLASSIC CRUISES AND CONCERTS

Cajon Classic Cruises continue along Main Street in downtown El Cajon. The car shows are held each Wednesday from 5 to 7:30 p.m. all summer long.

The city also hosts outdoor concerts in the park on Prescott Promenade in the same area along  Main Street every Friday night from 6 to 8 p.m. now through September. You can bring a picnic dinner, or arrive early to dine at one of the restaurants nearby.

SANTEE SUMMER CONCERTS CONTINUE NOW THROUGH AUGUST 17

Santee officials say it’s music to their ears –the city’s Summer Concerts taking stage on outdoor concerns running  each Thursday night through August 17th, for the July 4th week.  

X-FEST AUGUST 26

East County is hosting its first-ever X-Fest full of extreme-sport events, local vendors, superstar athletes, music, guest speakers, testimonies, entertainment and tons of free giveaways.

It’s hosted by Pathways Community Church in Santee on Saturday, August 26 from 3-9 p.m.  

 East County X-Fest will also feature several car shows, motorcycle shows, and local artist galleries.

CRYSTAL GAYLE IN CONCERT AT SYCUAN SEPT.9

Country music legend Crystal Gayle will perform at Sycuan’s Live and Up Close Tehatre on Saturday, September 9 at 8 p.m.

Shel was inducted into the Grand Ole Opry in 2017 by her sister, Loretta Lynn. Her signature songs include Don’t It Make My Brown Eyes Blue, You’ve Been Talking In Your Sleep, When I Dream, Half the Way and her duet with Eddie Rabbitt, Just You and I.

She  has released over 20 number one hits and has been awarded numerous times by the Grammy’s, the Country Music Association, the Academy of Country Music, the American Music Awards, and the American Music Operators Association—and she has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

COMIC PAULA POUNDSTONE PERFORMS IN EL CAJON SEPT. 29

 Paula Poundstone will be performing at The Magnolia in El Cajon on Friday, September 29 at 6:30 p.m. The iconic comedian has starred in several HBO specials,  hosts a weekly comedy podcast, Nobody Listens to Paula Poundstone, and is a panelist on NPR’s comedy news quizshow, Wait Wat…Don’t Tell Me!

Shew as the first female comic to perform standup comedy at the  White House Correspondents Dinner.  Her HBO special, Cats, Cops and Stuff, marked the first time a female comedian won Best Comedy Special in the Cable Ace Awards.
