DESTINATION EAST COUNTY: SIZZLING SUMMERTIME FESTIVITES

July 22, 2023 (San DIego's East County) -- As late July sizzles into hot August nights, there are some hot happenings coming up across San Diego’s inland region.

The fun includes the Ramona Country Fair, Pine Valley Days parade and festival, a comedy night, farm tours, party with police at Parkway Plaza, the Julian Star Fest, outdoor concerts and car shows, and the Mt. Helix Food and Wine Festival with a Western theme this year plus dancing under the stars.

RAMONA COUNTRY FAIR JULY 28-30

Three days of family fun are coming up at the Ramona Country Fair July 28-30.

Presented by the Ramona Chamber of Commerce, the fair features amusement rides, carnival games, live music, a cornhole competition, an off-road show, food & beverage vendors, craft & commercial vendors, western shows and more.

PINE VALLEY DAYS JULY 28-29

Pine Valley celebrates Pine Valley Days July 28th and 29th. It includes a Friday night barbecue, a parade on Saturday and famliy-fun festivities afterwards in the park until after dark.

The fun begins with a deep pit barbecue on Friday night from 5-9 p.m. at Pine Valley Park, with seasoned pork slow-cooked for 24 hours or chicken plates. There will also be a beer garden, and Pine Valley Days T-shirts for sale. From 6 to 9:30 there will be live music by the Big Sky Moon band and dancing at the gazebo in the park.

Then on Saturday morning, July 29 at 9 a.m., the parade starts along Old Highway 80 just before Pine Valley Road, ending on Pine Blvd. The parade is a fun family event filled with beautiful floats, horses, classic cars, stilt walkers, balloon artists and more.

Following the parade will be the annual Pine Valley Days event at the park. There you will enjoy live music by multiple bands, bounce houses, delicious food, and shopping.

COMEDY NIGHT IN LA MESA JULY 28

Need some laughs? Spacebar Café and Wine Bistro in La Mesa hosts a comedy night on the fourth Friday each month from 7:30 to 9 p.m.

On July 28, the talent lineup includes Gene Levin, Carol Johnson, Jennifer Mason, Chris Williams, Sara Lee Styner,Sapna Iyer, and Ben  Yin.

Besides lots of laughs, Spacebar Café offers a wide array of foods and beverages, from paninis, flatbread pizzas and acai bowls to smoothies, wines, and coffee drinks.

FARM TOURS AT OASIS CAMEL DAIRY

Oasis Camel Dairy in Ramona is offering farm tours on July 29 from 12 noon to 2 p.m. 

The tour includes a camel and bird  show, feeding camels and miniature sheep, along with other farm attractions and an option to ride a camel.

COMIC PAULA POUNDSTONE PERFORMS IN EL CAJON SEPT. 29

 Paula Poundstone will be performing at The Magnolia in El Cajon on Friday, September 29 at 6:30 p.m. The iconic comedian has starred in several HBO specials,  hosts a weekly comedy podcast, Nobody Listens to Paula Poundstone, and is a panelist on NPR’s comedy news quizshow, Wait Wat…Don’t Tell Me!

Shew as the first female comic to perform standup comedy at the  White House Correspondents Dinner.  Her HBO special, Cats, Cops and Stuff, marked the first time a female comedian won Best Comedy Special in the Cable Ace Awards. Paula’s awards.

PARTY WITH POLICE AT PARKWAY PLAZA AUGUST 1

 You’re invited to come party with police as El Cajon celebrates the 40th anniversary of its National Night Out event, fostering positive interactions between law enforcement and the local community. This year’s event, set to be the largest ever hosted, will take place on Tuesday, August 1 from 5 to 9 p.m. in the parking lot at Parkway Plaza Mall in El Cajon.  

This year’s event includes a fitness course where participants can challenge officers in an obstacle course.  The event will feature a live band, Whiskey Ridge, with country music and line dancing. Athletes from San Diego Wave will be attending with a mini pitch setup.  There will also be children’s crafts and a kids’ art competition.

Additionally, the event will host an auto showcase from local car dealers as well as opportunities to meet police, firefighters, paramedics, and representatives from the Sheriff, Humane Society, Highway Patrol and Border Patrol, plus check out their vehicles and equipment.  This event aims to  foster positive relationships between law enforcement and the community while creating lasting memories for all who attend. 

JULIAN STAR FEST AUGUST 11-13

The Julian Star Fest returns August 11th through the 13th .  

This year’s festivities include a free public star party on Saturday night, August 12th,  camping availability for tent and RV campers, astronomy games and crafts for kids,  exhibits by major telescope and accessory vendors, food and beverage vendors.

On Saturday only, there will also be a raffle for donated astronomy equipment plus  an optional behind-the-scenes tour of the world-famous Mount Laguna Observatory.

All proceeds from the event are used to help fund the San Diego Astronomy Association’s ongoing community educational efforts.

MT. HELIX FOOD AND WINE FESTIVAL AUGUST 19

You’re invited to don your cowboy boots and wrangle up the gang for the Mt. Helix Food and Wine Festival on the evening of August 19th.

This year’s  event features a Wild West theme, food and wine tasting from local restaurants and beverage companies, as well as artists, live and silent auctions, live music, sunset views from atop Mt. Helix. and dancing under the stars.

EL CAJON CLASSIC CRUISES AND CONCERTS

Cajon Classic Cruises continue along Main Street in downtown El Cajon. The car shows are held each Wednesday from 5 to 7:30 p.m. all summer long.

The city also hosts outdoor concerts in the park on Prescott Promenade in the same area along  Main Street every Friday night from 6 to 8 p.m. now through September. You can bring a picnic dinner, or arrive early to dine at one of the restaurants nearby.

SANTEE SUMMER CONCERTS CONTINUE NOW THROUGH AUGUST 17

Santee officials say it’s music to their ears –the city’s Summer Concerts taking stage on outdoor concerns running  each Thursday night through August 17th, for the July 4th week.  

LEMON GROVE CONCERTS IN THE PARK THURSDAY THROUGH AUGUST 10

 The City of Lemon Grove invites you to Concerts in the Park each Thursday evening from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Berry Street Park on Mount Vernon Street in Lemon Grove.  The concerts run from June 29 through August 10. Bring a blanket or lawn chair along with your own picnic or barbecue. Alcohol is prohibited, and pets must be on leashes.

Afterwards, you can join local veterans for a half-pound burger lunch at the Lakeside VFW.
