March 4, 2024 (San Diego’s East County) – With spring fast approaching, many festive and creative events are sprouting up across East County. These include Daffodil Days in Julian, Tomatomania at the Water Conservation Garden, an Earth Day Fair in La Mesa, a plein air art show in  Borrego Springs, a junior fair and barbecue in Lakeside, Nature Day on Mt. Helix, Cajon Classic cruises, plus plays, concerts, and a stargazing party.

DAFFODIL DAYS MARCH 1-APRIL 14

Julian Farm and Orchard invites you to enjoy Daffodil Days each Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. from March 1 through April 14, or whenever the beautiful yellow blooms are gone.

The farm offers u-pick daffodils,  as well as other farm activities including a petting zoo, tractor-pulled hayrides, axe throwing, rock-climbing wall, and a gift shop with locally crafted items as well as potted daffodils for sale.

PLEIN AIR INVITATIONAL ART SHOW IN BORREGO SPRINGS

The 18th Annual Plein Air Invitational in Borrego Springs, California promises to be a captivating celebration of art and nature. The event runs from March 4 to April 14.

 

The invitational centers around Plein Air paintings, which capture the unique beauty and environmental significance of the Anza-Borrego Desert and the Borrego Valley.

 

While wildflowers typically start popping up halfway through February, the peak blooming usually occurs in March and continues through April. Given all this winter's rain this year's floral blooms in the Anza Borrego should be early and quite exceptional.

 

Fourteen talented artists have been invited to create plein air or outdoors paintings during the week of March 4th to 9th, inspired by the desert landscape.

 

Throughout the week, new artwork will be displayed daily in the gallery at the Borrego Arts Institute.On March 9th, from 3 to 5 p.m., the awards ceremony and reception will take place.

TOMATOMANIA MARCH 8-9

The Water Conservation Garden at Cuyamaca College invites you to Tomatomania, the world’s largest tomato seedling sale.

Tomatomania will be held March 8 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and March 9 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Find rare heirloom tomato seedlings, as well as expert advice on how to grow them.

LAMPLIGHTERS PRESENTS “FIVE WOMEN WEARING THE SAME DRESS”

Lamplighter’s Theatre in La Mesa will present the comic play, “Five Women Wearing the Same Dress.” The show runs March 1 through 24.

During an ostentatious wedding reception at a Tennessee, estate, five reluctant, identically clad bridesmaids hide out in an upstairs bedroom, each with her own reason to avoid the proceedings below. As the afternoon wears on, these five very different women joyously discover a common bond in this wickedly funny, irreverent, and touching celebration of women’s spirit.

EASTERN SAN DIEGO COUNTY JUNIOR FAIR AND BBQ MARCH 17 IN LAKESIDE

Here’s an event to squeal about! A tradition since 1947, the Eastern San Diego County Junior Fair will be held on Sunday, March 17 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Lakeside Rodeo Grounds (12584 Mapleview St., Lakeside).

Future Farmers of American and 4-H members will be exhibiting and auctioning livestock that they have raised.

You can also savor slow-cooked barbecued meats and vie for raffle prizes, as well as get more information about 4-H and FFOA. All proceeds will benefit the nonprofit  Eastern San Diego County Junior Fair. Tickets for the barbecue are $15.

LYLE LOVETT AT THE MAGNOLIA MARCH 24

Country music singer and songwriter Lyle Lovett will perform live in concert at the Magnolia theater in El Cajon on March 24 at 7 p.m.

Lovett has won four Grammy awards, including best country vocal performance and best country album. He’s recorded 13 albums and released 25 singles, including the hit song,”Cowboy Man.”

STAR PARTY AT MISSION TRAILS APRIL 5

Mission Trails Regional Park and the San Diego Astronomy Association invites you to a star party on the first Friday of each month starting at sunset at the Kumeyaay Lake campground parking lot. The next star party is on April 5.

Telescopes will be available to view the nighttime sky including stars, planets and constellations, weather permitting.  Find more information at Mission Trails Regional Park’s website at MTRP.org   

CAJON CLASSIC CRUISES

Cajon Classic Cruises opens the season on Wednesday night, April 12 with a full street closure for the car shows at Main and Magnolia, along with plenty of fun, food and entertainment for the whole family.

Cajon Classic Cruises will continue all summer long each Wednesday night from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. April 19 will be Girls Night Out, and on April 26, Cajon Classic Cruises will be celebrating the event’s 20th anniversary.

EARTH DAY FAIR IN LA MESA APRIL 20

The City of La Mesa is inviting residents, visitors, sponsors and vendors to join its family-friendly Earth Day Fair on Saturday, April 20 at MacArthur Park

The festival is a celebration of the city’s commitment to environmental stewardship and a showcase of local businesses that offer eco-friendly products and services.

The festival will run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and feature a variety of activities for all ages and interests.
