January 24, 2023 (La Mesa) – Mastiff kitchen in La Mesa is serving up homemade sausages that will really knock your socks off, but their menu has so much more to offer, so you might want to share family style. From crispy pan pizza’s and burgers to Brussel sprouts, you won’t be disappointed.

Co-owner Jacob Bartlett, told ECM, “My childhood friend, Eric Gallerstein, and I grew up together in Escondido. We started with a food truck that launched in 2013, which we still use for corporate catering and weddings. We have a location inside North Park Beer Co. that we opened in 2016.” Bartlett and Gallerstein opened their first stand-alone brick-n-mortar location in La Mesa this past July located at 4253 Palm Ave.

The family friendly atmosphere and several TVs to watch your favorite game on are sure to be hits at this casual eatery. Mastiff Kitchen even has a small arcade area for the whole family to enjoy.

Bartlett says, “We're proud to boast 36 taps of craft beer and wine. People are loving the Crispy Pan Pizzas and our Double Smash Burger.” With that many taps available to choose from, you are sure to find a cold beer you will love.

When you enter, grab a menu, and have a seat. There is plenty to choose from and you may need a minute to decide. When you are ready go to the counter to order and the server will bring you your order.

I started with of course the sausage and peppers pizza (pictured at top) . The crispy crust and fluffy dough are a great mix in texture and taste. The sauce is perfectly cradled in the thick dough and plenty of cheese and toppings in this pie. The homemade sausage is terrific, mild yet full of flavor and the highlight of my slice. I ordered this as a lunch special that included two slices of pizza, salad a fresh rustic tomato salad with large pieces of heirloom tomatoes, cucumber, red onion, bell pepper, fresh herbs, balsamic vinaigrette for $11.95.

I then tried the chicken bacon ranch sandwich piled high with a perfectly grilled chicken breast, bacon, lettuce, tomato, Swiss cheese, butter braised onions and smothered in ranch on a grilled potato bun. I had the lunch special that came with a fresh side salad. I ate this entire sandwich because I simply could not stop. Lunch special with sandwich includes salad or fries and a beer for only $19.95.

I washed that down with a pint of ‘Same As It Ever Was’ IPA by Seek brewing here in San Diego.

Other items to look for on the menu are the “Pork Nugs’, crispy pork belly, gochujang glaze, sesame seeds, toasted peanut. Or the Garlic Maple Brussel sprouts, featuring caramelized brussels, garlic maple glaze, shaved Parmesan cheese.

Feeling extra hungry give the Double Smash Burger a try with its (2) smashed patties, American cheese, butter braised onions, lettuce, tomato, house sauce, on a grilled potato bun.

Don’t forget to order dessert, give the Gooey Cookie Skillet a try. Reese’s peanut butter, graham crackers, sweetened condensed milk, vanilla ice cream, caramel & chocolate sauces served in a hot cast iron skillet.

The Mastiff Kitchen also offers a kids menu of a plain cheeseburger or a grilled cheese with fries for those finicky eaters.

Bartlett told ECM, “In addition to a great happy hour and weekday lunch specials, we're 'rolling' out some daily deals. One of them we'll be partnering with local schools and non-profits giving 10% of all 'take-out’ orders on Thursdays!” Other daily specials include  Monday happy hour all night and Wine Wednesdays.

Mastiff Kitchen is located at 4253 Palm Ave. La Mesa, Ca. 91941.
