June 1, 2026 (La Mesa) – East County has lost a big part of its community vibe with the passing of Margaret (Maggie) Eggers.
A devoted wife, stepmother, sister, aunt, colleague and friend who placed family and community at the center of her life, Eggers passed away on May 28, 2026, with her husband Robert (Bob) by her side.
Maggie Eggers shared 44 years of marriage with Bob, a partnership defined by deep friendship, loyalty and love, friends say.
Eggers officially joined the La Mesa Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors in September 2016, and will also be missed by the business community, said Mary England, president and CEO of the La Mesa Chamber of Commerce.
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of our Chairman and friend, Maggie Eggers,” England said. “She was a strong force that helped guide our Chamber in a positive direction. Her vision, wisdom and steadfast leadership were the driving force in the success of our Chamber.”
England also said: “On a personal note, Maggie was a devoted and dear friend for the past 29 years and I shall miss her smile, her wit, her laugh and her presence in my life.”
Eggers was previously part of the La Mesa Environmental Sustainability Commission. She was closely connected to the community and maintained lifelong relationships that meant a great deal to her.
At a groundbreaking ceremony for the Boys & Girls Clubs of La Mesa, which would later include the building of the Bill Walton Gymnasium Eggers, shared how she grew up down the street from NBA star Walton.
“When he was a kid, he would walk up and down Colorado Avenue with his basketball on his way to Sunset Park to shoot basketballs,” Eggers said.
Born Dec. 17, 1956, at Grossmont Hospital to parents Vesta and James Gibbs, Eggers was the youngest of three children. Her parents were educators, and during her youth she traveled with them to myriad countries.
She found her true profession at EDCO Waste & Recycling Corp., and was an EDCO team member for 42 years. She and Bob Eggers have been part of the EDCO family for a combined 82 years.
Maggie Eggers graduated from Helix High School and attended Grossmont College. While in college, she met Bob and the two began a relationship that would span 50 years. They married in 1982 in the garden at her parents’ home, and began building a life together grounded in unconditional love.
A loyal and enthusiastic supporter of the business community, Eggers served on the Board of Directors of the La Mesa Chamber of Commerce and later assumed the helm as Chairman, England said.
“She contributed her time, energy and unwavering support to the growth and success of the La Mesa business community,” England said, noting that Eggers was also a dedicated member of the La Mesa Rotary Club.
In addition to her husband Bob and stepson William, she is survived by brother James Eric Gibbs; sister-in-law Inga Maria Gibbs; nieces Paulina Simone Gibbs, Genevieve Elizabeth Gibbs and Julia Rachel Gibbs; nephews James Aaron Gibbs and Stephen Jacob Gibbs; brother John Francis Gibbs and sister-in-law Kathy Gibbs. Maggie Eggers is also survived by step-grandchildren, Jonathan Eggers and Josh Eggers.
A celebration of Maggie Eggers’ life will be held starting at 11 a.m., Saturday, July 25, at the La Mesa Community Center, 4975 Memorial Drive in La Mesa.
