May 30, 2026 (San Diego) – A nonprofit with poor ratings for charitable organizations has sent mailers out locally soliciting donations for gear to help law enforcement agencies.  The San Diego Sheriff’s Department has posted warnings on social media about the mailers, stating, “the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office will never ask the public for any money to buy supplies such as bulletproof vests, helmets or other equipment for our deputies.”

The flyers were sent by the United States Deputy Sheriff’s Association (USDSA) and has prompted warnings from numerous law enforcement agencies across the nation. The organization has a dismal one-star rating on Charity Navigator (out of four stars possible). Consumer Reports ranks the USDSA among the lowest rated charities.

The San Diego Sheriff’s department advises, “Before donating to any organization, be sure to conduct thorough research to ensure the money goes to a legitimate, reputable charity. If in doubt, contact your local law enforcement agency.”
