August 6, 2024 (Spring Valley) – The Spring Valley Community Church has agreed to lease parking lot space to the County to serve as a safe parking place for homeless people. Supervisors have voted to approve the measure,  but on August 7 at 7 p.m, the church’s pastor will hold a question and answer forum for the public.

The church is located at 3310 Bancroft Drive, Spring Valley. A tour will be provided and questions are welcome.

Some community members have raised concerns over why the project was voted upon without holding a public forum first. A similar issue raised in Lemon Grove where sleeping cabins for homeless individuals were approved by Supervisors before any community forum was held. A larger sleeping cabin project was also approved at a separate location in Spring Valley, but was later cancelled after public objections over proximity to sensitive locations.

Homelessness has risen sharply in East County over the past year, including Spring Valley.

According to survey findings

published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on Aug. 6, the report estimated that 27.1 million Americans of all ages were without health insurance as of March this year.

Housing & rehab

I think housing along with rehabilitation to get clean and sober would need to be combined if a long term fix is going to truly work for homeless addicts. Otherwise the vicious cycle will continue...Leaving homeless people in the streets just compounds the ever growing issues. Including hanging out in areas that create a nuisance to others, substance abuse, trash and debris everywhere, human feces and urine, theft for a variety of reasons - food to eat, items needed, stolen items to sell for drugs, etc. This ever growing homeless population will continue due to the economy, high cost of housing, and so forth. The answers are there to help resolve this, yet it will take communities displaying compassion, and politicians to help. Doing little to nothing is not the answer. Where should homeless people go if no one wants them around? Effective solutions need to be initiated because the homeless crisis is becoming more widespread every year. Not just addicts. Working people that can't afford to rent, families with children, some have lost jobs or had a catastrophic event, many live in RV's and vehicles. Homelessness can happen to anyone, at any time, for a multitude of reasons. Not every homeless person is a drug addict or alcoholic. Unfortunately these are the ones we see the most probably due to them not caring anymore. Many more remain unnoticed, invisible, due to the stigma, especially school age children. Being ridiculed by their peers is probably common. The streets must be cleaned up, and a viable approach found.

Homeless people are criminals, a hatred held by many,

so why help hated people in a democracy, for heaven's sake? If done properly it would perhaps include tiny housing and help with food, medicine, security etc -- but who cares about others who have a hard time. The county supervisors are paid a couple hundred thousand annually so they care the least.

Spring Valley and Lemon Grove

Why? These are two residential areas, that need some work! The Lemon Grove proposed tiny homes are a straight shot down Bancroft to Troy. They are less than a mile apart. We need mental health and drug rehabilitation this is the crisis and get them off the streets. Tiny Homes prove not to work!
