October 9, 2023 (Spring Valley)-- A man is in custody after attacking his wife and sparking a five-hour standoff in the East County that began shortly after 4:30 p.m. yesterday.

Deputies from the Rancho San Diego Sheriff's Station responded to a call reporting a woman being attacked by her husband at an apartment complex in the10200 block of Madrid Way in Spring Valley.

Before she was transported to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries, the woman told deputies her husband, Steven Walker, 36, was in possession of two handguns and a rifle.

When deputies attempted to contact Walker, he went back into his apartment and locked the door, says Detective Chris Paradis. Despite multiple phone calls and announcements from deputies for him to exit his apartment, Walker refused.

The Sheriff's Special Enforcement Detail (SED/SWAT), Sheriff's Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Unit and Sheriff's Crisis Negotiations Team (CNT) were called to the scene. A search warrant was also obtained by Rancho San Diego Sheriff's Station Investigators.

Just after 10:30 p.m., Walker exited his apartment and peacefully surrendered to deputies. He was arrested on charges of assault with great bodily injury and domestic battery. The investigation is ongoing.
