47.5K viewsRAISING A TRANSGENDER CHILD: A MOM SPEAKS OUT 4.9K

Total Views: 51 Q & A with author of “Raising Ryland” Source: Foothills United Methodist Church press release August 21, 2016 (La Mesa) – “When the family dies I’m going to cut my hair so I can be a boy,” said Ryland Whittington when he was just four years old. His family was stunned. While some cross-play and cross-dressing is normal in children, Ryland’s mom, Hillary Whittington said, it was clear her child had been in emotional pain for several years. “This was not an overnight decision,” Hillary said. She began researching transgender children and slowly came to the realization her child may be a transgender person. Hillary will be talking about their difficult and sometimes painful journey at a book signing and complementary brunch Sunday, August 21, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Foothills United Methodist Church, 4031 Avocado Blvd. La Mesa, CA 91941. Her husband, Jeff, and their two children, Ryland, 8, and Brynley, 4, will also be available. There will be time for questions from the audience. Jeff and Hillary Whittington are members of this church. Hillary’s book, “Raising Ryland: Our Story of Parenting a Transgender Child with No Strings Attached” was recently published and has landed her and her family on many network and local news shows. The family was the subject of a CNN documentary, “Raising Ryland: Parenting a Transgender Child.” The band, “High Dive Heart” tells the Ryland family story in their new music video ”Misfit.” “Ryland’s persistence went on for three years, beginning when he was two years old,” Hillary said. “I had to get to the bottom of it.” Jeff was a firefighter and was gone for long hours so he didn’t see the tenacity and torment Hillary saw in their child. It took many conversations, and visits to a psychologist and a support group before he was convinced. Now he is fully supportive and engaged in the effort to inform the public about transgender issues. “There are so many ways to make a family,” said Hillary. Printer-friendly version

Total Views: 36 East County News Service April 23, 2016 (Spring Valley) — Students and staff at Monte Vista High School know that Mondays are special. They are faculty work days; classes begin two hours later than usual so students get the chance to sleep in. But this coming Monday, April 25th, won’t be a typical one for the Monarch student body. Instead of sleeping in, more than 200 students and staff members will work with “Stop Hunger Now” to package 40,000 meals for needy children in developing countries. The students and staff are excited to be a part of this community service event hosted by their school and nearby Foothills United Methodist Church. At 6:30 a.m., a semi-truck will deliver raw ingredients and supplies to the school. Working in teams on an assembly line, volunteers will combine rice, soy, dehydrated vegetables and a packet containing 23 essential vitamins and minerals into small meal packages. Each meal package only costs 29 cents to make and has a shelf-life of two years. After an intense two hours, all 40,000 meal packages will be assembled, boxed and ready for shipment. Meals will be distributed to feeding programs that promote education, improve health and nutrition, and aid in crisis relief. Foothills UMC lead pastor Dr. Eric Smith said his congregation jumped at the chance to provide the bulk of the funding for this event. “It startles people in this modern era to learn that one in nine people on the planet go to bed hungry each night,” Smith said. “Hunger takes more lives than AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis combined. We can either discuss this tragedy on Sundays from the pulpit or we can do something about it. Combining our resources with the energy of the Monte Vista student body is the perfect partnership to solve a solve-able problem” Monte Vista High School has a tradition of giving and community service. “Events like this are incredible learning opportunities for students. It opens their eyes to issues affecting other students in the world and shows them their small actions have a large impact. We all have a responsibility to work together to build a future for those less fortunate,” said Randy Montesanto, Principal of Monte Vista High School.
