May 8, 2013 (Otay) – The County Medical Examiner has ruled the death of Reyna Carolina Genel, 16, a suicide.
She had been reported missing after going jogging around the reservoir, her sister told authorities. On May 6, passerbys found her unconscious in the Otay Reservoir at the upper dam.
She was transported to Scripps mercy Hospital, where despite aggressive efforts, her death was pronounced. Genel, a Chula Vista resident, died of blunt impact injuries to her head.
Mater Dei Catholic High School held a prayer vigil tonight in her memory.
