May 27, 2026 (Julian) – A head-on collision on May 25 shortly before 7 p.m. on Pine Hills Road, just north of Deer Lake Park in Julian, resulted in one death and injuries to four other people.
According to the California Highway Patrol, a 24-year-old man from Hemet was driving a 2024 Toyota GR-86 southbound on Pine Hills Road when his vehicle veered into oncoming traffic, crashing into the front of a 2020 Hyundai Elantra driven by a Julian man, 33.
The Toyota’s engine caught fire, however the driver was able to safely exit and was transported to Palomar Hospital with major injuries.
The driver of the Hyundai was transported to Palomar Hospital with moderate injuries. Two passengers in the Hyundai were transported to Palomar Hospital with major injuries.
Another passenger from the Hyundai died of injuries at the scene. He has been identified as Rafael Garcia Rojas Mira, 35, of Julian, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s office.
This is an ongoing investigation, however drugs and/or alcohol do not appear to be a factor in the crash, according to the CHP.
