Story and photos by Liz Alper September 22, 2018 (Santee) – ECM Sports is excited about this week’s edition of Friday Night Lights.  It comes to you from West Hills for the first time, where the incredibly aesthetically pleasing blue field greeted us.  Tonight, the Pack hosted the Vaqueros of El Capitan in the inaugural Tony Burner Memorial Cup, named after the late Wolfpack quarterback and Vaquero coordinator who passed away a year ago.  Burner was the son of El Capitan head coach Ron Burner.  These two are polar opposites of each other; the Vaqueros were struggling at 1-3 heading into tonight, while the Wolf Pack were undefeated at 4-0. West Hills put together an impressive first drive—including a huge run by senior quarterback Jordan Young that put the Pack on the Vaqueros’ 20 yard line—but ultimately, the Vaqueros defense stuffed the offense and drove right downfield on their next possession, with junior quarterback Wick Hauser’s pass to senior wide out Nathan Schunk, who made a leaping catch in the end zone for the score.  The Vaqueros led 7-0.  On the Pack’s very next drive, Young’s pass was intercepted by senior Bryce Smith, who returned it all the way down for a pick six to give the Vaqueros a 14-0 lead after one. In the second quarter, West Hills was faced with a 4th and 3.  Naturally, Jack Browning was on the field.  But the senior wasn’t kicking…he was running!  Browning took Young’s pitch and ran it in for the score to get West Hills on the board, now trailing 14-7.  But the Vaqueros recovered from that blunder easily as Hauser and Schunk connected again for another Vaqueros touchdown to go up by two scores again at halftime, 21-7. In the third, Young made himself star of the show.  First, he completed a long first down pass to senior Trent Oberg, then he ran it all the way in from midfield himself for the West Hills score.  Browning’s extra point attempt was blocked and West Hills trailed 21-13 after three quarters. Despite the Pack’s efforts, El Cap tried to ice the game in the fourth, starting with senior Marlon Pineda’s field goal to make the score 24-13.  Young didn’t give up.  On the first play of the next Wolf Pack drive, he ran it all the way downfield for another score.  The two-point conversion was good.  We had a three-point ballgame at 24-21.  But Hauser crushed the Pack’s hopes like he’d been doing all game.  Thanks to a litany of penalties from both teams, the Vaqueros found themselves at the goal line thanks to the Wolf Pack and Hauser punched it in himself at the one to win the first Tony Burner Memorial Game 31-21 and even better, hand West Hills their first loss of the season as they fall to 4-1.  The Vaqueros move to 2-3. UP NEXT The Vaqueros go home to Lakeside to host Helix next week at 7:00 p.m.  The Pack head into El Cajon to face the Braves El Cajon Valley, also next week at 7:00 p.m. Other East County scores: Christian 33, Santa Fe Christian 10 Monte Vista 42, Bishops 26 Valhalla 0, Otay Ranch 37 Mar Vista 27, Santana 13 Steele Canyon 52, Mira Mesa 35 Poway 51, Grossmont 21 Chadwick 62, Foothills Christian 16 Southwest El Centro 0, Granite Hills 38                                                                                                               Printer-friendly version

Story and photos by Liz Alper Cover photo:  Helix sophomore Thomas Caneday posted nine complete innings while giving up just four hits and no runs in the shutout win for the Highlanders. April 24, 2018 (Lakeside) – El Capitan and Helix baseball have produced some outstanding college and MLB recruits and today, we got to see both programs in action at Hostetler Field on the campus of El Capitan High.  The Vaqueros, however, have had a rocky season, going 6-11, but the positive takeaway is that they are .500 (2-2) in the Grossmont League coming into today’s game.  The Highlanders have a decent overall record (12-7), but are strangely winless in league play, going 0-2.  Sophomore Thomas Caneday got the start today for Helix against senior Blake Peyton for El Cap. After a two-inning pitcher’s duel, Helix finally cut through Peyton’s strong pitching in the third.  After sophomore Alonzo Richardson’s fielder’s choice, a few wild pitches by Peyton moved him around the diamond to third.  The Vaqueros were too slow on fielding junior Eric Smelko’s base hit and Richardson came home to give the Highlanders a 1-0 lead. Peyton did a good job of keeping the Highlanders quiet for a few innings, but the Scottie dawgs ate him alive in the fifth, starting with junior Devin Baker’s leadoff single.  The left and center fielder collided trying to make the catch on the next at-bat and Richardson had an RBI triple.  He and Smelko tag-teamed again on Smelko’s at-bat when another RBI single brought Richardson in.  Junior Carlos Oquita hit an RBI single of his own to score Smelko.  Senior Austin Kretzschmar’s sac safety squeeze bunt that scored senior Brandon Peterson capped off a phenomenal Helix inning and the Scottie dawgs took great pitching and defense to the end to shut out the Vaqueros 5-0.  Caneday pitched a complete-game shutout while giving up just four hits to give the Highlanders their first win in the Grossmont League for a 1-2 league, 13-7 overall record.  The Vaqueros fall to 6-12 and lose their .500 league record, falling to 2-3. Up next: Both teams will face each other again at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday.                                                     Printer-friendly version

Story and photos by Liz Alper January 17, 2018 (Spring Valley) – For the first high school coverage of the new year, ECM traveled to Spring Valley, where the Vaqueros of El Capitan saw the Monte Vista Monarchs in the pool.  The lady Monarchs have a rough start to the season, going 2-4 overall and winless in league (0-2).  The Vaqueros are doing a little better; 6-5 overall but also winless (0-2) in league. Though it was a pretty even keel to start the game, the Vaqueros secured a small early lead in the first quarter on four hard goals and adding a buzzer beater at the end to take a 5-2 lead after one. El Cap poured on more goals in the second quarter, holding the Monarchs to just one goal and heading into the half with a comfy 9-3 lead. The Vaqueros reached double digits in the third, though a Monte Vista goal from mid-pool towards the end of the third cut the lead to seven, 13-6. Monte Vista managed to play better defense in the last quarter, but were still only held to just two goals as the Vaqueros played defense just as well and added to their lead and got a well-deserved first league win, 15-8.  They move to 7-5 overall while the Monarchs fall to 2-5 and remain winless (0-3) in league play. Next up for the Vaqueros is a trip to Santee to take on the Sultans at 5:30 p.m.  The Monarchs will stay home for a non-conference game against Hilltop on Friday at 5:40 p.m.                 Printer-friendly version
