Story and photos by Liz Alper October 6, 2017 (Lakeside) – ECM Friday Night Lights is back after a two-week hiatus with our first-ever trip to Lakeside as the Foothillers of Grossmont (3-2 overall) made the trip out to visit the Vaqueros of El Capitan (2-3 overall) in both teams’ first matchup of Grossmont League play. An early fumble at the one yard line by senior wide receiver Star Iuli in the first was costly for the Vaqueros, as the Foothillers marched downfield with some great passing and sophomore quarterback Jamie Odom punched it in for a 7-0 Hillers lead at the end of one. But in the second, the Hillers did a little shooting in the foot themselves. They were about to punt it away after a miserable, penalty and incompletion-ridden drive when the punt was blocked and recovered by the Vaqueros at the 17 yard line. Iuli, the king of making things happen, made his way to the end zone to make the catch on senior Antonio Olivieri’s short pass on the second play of a two-play drive and the Vaqueros were back in it, tying the game after a horrible start. Yet another special teams mistake turned out to be costly, this time for the Vaqueros, as Grossmont picked up a safety to get out in front again. Things got worse for El Cap. On the last play of the half, Olivieri’s pass was intercepted by Grossmont’s senior defensive back Andrew Lira and taken back for a pick six and the Foothillers had a comfy 16-7 lead at the half. Grossmont added on in the third. After a big catch by senior wide out Josh Moala that put the Hillers at the one, senior running back Shevell Sterling Jr. put it in for the score. The Foothillers led 23-7 after three. Sterling sniffed out the end zone again to kick off the fourth. A few minutes later, Odom went deep to find the junior Desmond Carter for a nice catch and score. Sterling ran in his hat trick touchdown, Grossmont added another on a pass to junior Conner Sanchez and this one was too far out of reach for El Cap. The Vaqueros fall 51-7 and suffer a loss to start Grossmont League play and fall to 2-4 overall. The Foothillers start league play 1-0 and move to 4-2 overall. Next week, the Foothillers visit neighboring El Cajon for a rivalry game against Valhalla. Kickoff is at 7:00 p.m. As for the Vaqueros, they come inland too to pay a visit to Helix. Kickoff for that game is at 6:00 p.m. Printer-friendly version

Story and photos by Liz Alper April 27, 2017 (Spring Valley) – Mount Miguel softball is a little worse for wear; they’re 5-7 overall and 1-3 in league play so far heading into today’s game against El Capitan. The Vaqueros are a different story; they sport a decent 12-10 overall record, but are undefeated in league play with a 4-0 record coming into today. Sophomore Nya Maga started on the hill for the Matadors against junior Elena Laddon for the Vaqueros. El Cap struck for two runs early in the first. In the third, sophomore Baily Olaveson singled and scored a run and the Vaqueros led 3-0. Junior Kim Garcia hit a sac fly and the Vaqueros increased their lead to 4-0. After a crazy rundown play in the fourth, freshman Hannah Davis and senior Amanda Vasquez both hit sac flies to bump the Vaqueros up to a 6-0 lead. The Vaqueros had a big fifth inning. Freshman Olivia Martinez knocked an RBI single to left, senior Maria Lotta hit a sac fly, Davis hit an RBI single to left and Vasquez tripled and scored two. Add one more and when it was all said and done, the Vaqueros run-ruled the Matadors 12-0 to move to 13-10 overall and remain undefeated in league play, 5-0. The Matadors fall to 5-8 overall and 1-4 in league play. The Vaqueros get a nice break until Tuesday when the Braves of El Cajon Valley High visit Lakeside. First pitch is set for 4:00 p.m. The Matadors are off till Tuesday too; they’ll travel to La Mesa to face Helix. First pitch is also at 4:00 p.m. Printer-friendly version

2.2K viewsA STEER RUSTLING CAPER IN LAKESIDE 3.2K

Total Views: 34 By Miriam Raftery Photo: Left and right: bull atop El Capitan High School and former Pinnacle Peak restaurant May 6, 2016 (Lakeside) – A popular icon in downtown Lakeside—the bull statue atop the former Pinnacle Peak Steakhouse on Maine Avenue—vanished recently, leaving locals to ponder, where’s the beef? Fortunately the missing steer statue was found this morning not far away, standing on the roof of El Capitan High School—and that’s no bull. No one has come forward to fess up to steering the statue to the high school, though a senior prank is rumored. In fact, the lonely bull has gone missing before, former Pinnacle Peak manager Toni Petroro told our editor back when the steakhouse was at its former location in Santee. Petroro said the wayward bull was actually stolen several times, usually as student pranks, but always found its way back home. This time around, Lakeside resident and photographer Billy Ortiz took the bull by the horns and wrestled the life-sized steer statue dubbed “Fred” into his pickup truck. He hauled it back to its now-rightful owner, Rick Chiles, proprietor of the building that housed the now-closed steakhouse–but paused first for a photo opportunity in front of a cattle drive mural painted on a nearby building. Milking this story for all it’s worth, we’d be remiss not to tell you about a second fiberglass cow named Betsy, located just across the street at the Lakeside Historical Society’s headquarters. “The two have been gazing at each other across Maine Avenue for two years,” Ortiz quipped on his Facebook page while Fred the bull was missing. Later he surmised, “Lakeside is grateful Fred is back home.” Printer-friendly version
3.2K viewsEL CAPITAN THEATRE BROUGHT US THE ABSURD THIS HOLIDAY SEASON 2.2K

Total Views: 36 By Kathy Carpenter Associate /Youth Reviewer www.sdtheatrereviews.com December 7, 2015 – (Lakeside) – For a breather from all the holiday cheer I took in El Capitan High School’s Acting Can Be Murder. Was this the show perfect? Of course not. These were high school students, works in progress. But the show was light-hearted fun, totally entertaining, and Lindsay Gampel-Qualin, teacher and director, has some talented actors emerging in Lakeside. Acting Can Be Murder is a spoof on both Agatha Chrustie and Alfred Hitchcock; a murder-mystery farce of a period piece play. We went behind the scenes as they rehearsed for opening night. Corissa Knaresbora played the lead, Delores Gordon. On stage for most of the show she made the audience laugh. Doing a fabulous job playing the director, Zoee Bauer. She was totally into her role. Megan Patton, was also a stand out as Georgia Styles.Katherine Calderon, also did a wonderful job. However, the show had many colorful characters, to which the entire cast did an incredible work bringing them to life. I’m always happy to go out to El Capitan’s plays. Every time I’ve gone out there, and it is a ways, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed myself. It’s too late the winter show. but I’m sure they will be just as fabulous this Spring. Try to come out to catch a show.. This may seem like a repeated theme. But until I see these school theatre full for these hard working students I will continue to encourage you to stop by.
