November 4, 2023 (Santee) – International touring musician Mean Mary, with her brother, Frank James, will appear at Summit UU Fellowship, 8778 Cottonwood Ave. in Santee on Saturday,  November 25 at 7 p.m. Her special performance will include some crowd favorites such as her original songs, "Iron Horse" and "Blazing," new songs and holiday music from her brand-new Christmas CD.

Mean Mary is an endorsing artist for Deering Banjos in Spring Valley. The Deerings have named her their Goodtime Ambassador. She has recorded 19 albums, her newest being Portrait of a Woman.   Known internationally for her lightning-fast fingers and raw, unmistakable vocal sound, Mean Mary performs her songs that travel the genres of roots, bluegrass, blues and folk rock.

Born in Alabama, Mean Mary could read music before she could read words and wrote original songs at age five. Her family later moved to Minnesota’s North Woods, where they lived in a tent until they built a log cabin by hand. By age seven she was proficient on vocals, guitar, banjo, and violin. Later her family moved to Florida, where her mother ran an organic farm, caught and sold reptiles including snakes for anti-venom production—ventures in which Mary helped out. Later, the family moved to Tennessee.

Mary began appearing on a TV show and at Nashville venues, while being homeschooled. By age 9, she had passed a state test for 12th grade equivalency in education. Soon, her life became one long road show of events, venues, TV, radio, and film.

But then a devastating car accident one rainy night nearly killed her and left her with a paralyzed vocal cord, Miraculously, she fought to regain her strength—stacking haybales and building a barn--and save her musical career. She persistently exercises her vocal cords and ultimately recovered fully.

She started touring again, sometimes alone, sometimes with her brother, and sometimes with her full band. She wrote and co-wrote books. Her novel, Wherefore Art Thou, Jane?, won first place in the Reader’s Favorite International Awards.  She began starring in her own Nashville TV show: The Never-Ending Street, as her international fan base grew.

Today Mary plays eleven instruments and tours internationally. She is also an award winning song writer, book author, and recently her original banjo song, Iron Horse, (the story of Native American maiden and her horse racing against a train) received the IMA’s Vox Populi award for best Americana song (and has been viewed over 12 million times on YouTube):  http://youtu.be/6CNB5OLUPM.

She produces music, produces videos (her YouTube videos have received over 33 million visits), tours extensively in the U.S. and overseas and is writing a novel trilogy about the music world.
