AZTEC WOMEN'S TENNIS BLANKS HAWAII 7-0 FOR FOURTH STRAIGHT WIN

February 14, 2024 (San Diego) - The San Diego State women’s tennis team played at the Aztec Tennis Center for the first time in over two weeks on Wednesday afternoon when it hosted Hawai’i. The Aztecs won the doubles point for the first time this season before sweeping all six singles matches in a dominant 7-0 victory.

The Scarlet and Black wins its fourth consecutive match to improve to 4-1 while the Rainbow Wahine fall to an even 3-3.

 

In doubles, Andreea Velcea and Andjela Skrobonja, San Diego State’s two returning players from last season, paired up on the second court. They faced Sheena Masuda and Nikola Homolkova and won 6-1. On the top court, Yasmine Kabbaj and Myah Petchey bested Ana Vilcek and Nelly Knezkova 6-2 to take the doubles point. Gloria Alogo and Zoe Olmos trailed Anna Kern and Hannah Galindo 5-1 when the Aztecs clinched the doubles point.

 

In her singles match, Skrobonja played on the second court against Knezkova. She cruised to a 6-1 win in the first set and took the second 6-3.

 

On the top court, Kabbaj had a tough draw in No. 86-ranked Vilcek but was still able to knock off her opponent in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3.

 

Playing on court No. 6, Olmos bested Galindo in a consistent 6-2, 6-2 match to clinch an Aztec victory.

 

Alogo went up against Masuda on the fourth court. After falling 6-4 in the first set, she bounced back to take the second 6-2 and the tiebreaker 10-7.

 

Facing Homolkova, Petchey dropped the first set on court No. 3 by the score of 6-3. She recovered to take the second by the same score. Petchey carried that momentum over into the tiebreaker as she coasted to a 10-2 win.

 

After taking the first set 6-1 from Joelle Lanz on court No. 5, Velcea fell 6-4 in the second. She won a back-and-forth tiebreaker 10-7 to make it a clean sweep for San Diego State.

 

San Diego State does not have much time to prepare for its next matches. SDSU hosts Long Beach State at 1 p.m. on Friday and No. 14-ranked California at noon on Sunday.
