Amber Pezzolla and Anique Hermann Lead SDSU With Three Goals Apiece

By Ryan Schuler

March 21, 2012 (San Diego)--It didn’t just rain, it poured. Yet, even the dreadful weather was not enough to stop the San Diego State women’s water polo team from earning an 11-5 victory over Bucknell University at the Aztec Invitational presented by Courtyard Marriott on Saturday morning, March 17 at the Aztec Aquaplex on the campus of SDSU.

The win improved SDSU’s record to 13-6, while the loss dropped Bucknell to 10-15 on the season.

“We played well, and played through the calls,” SDSU senior Meaghan Poland said.

The Aztecs jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first quarter, getting goals from Poland, Amber Pezzolla, Anique Hermann, and Samantha Voigt. Hermann and Pezzolla would score again in the second period to give the Aztecs six goals in the first half. Bucknell’s Mackenzie Perry would skip one in with 3:00 left in the second period to cut the lead to 6-1 heading into halftime.

The third period seemed to be a repeat of the first period as Poland, Pezzolla, Hermann, and Voigt scored again for SDSU. The Bison would score two goals in the third period, as the Aztecs led 10-3 after three periods.

Freshman Morgan Klingfus would start the fourth period at goalie, as starter Kelly Campoli finished the game with seven saves. Bucknell would outscore SDSU 2-1 in the fourth period, but would ultimately lose to the Aztecs, 11-5.

Pezzolla and Hermann finished the match with three goals apiece, as Poland and Voigt each added two goals. Leanne Ford chipped in one goal to round out the SDSU scoring. Alana Burgess, Emily Whalen and Pezzolla each recorded two assists as well.

“I think we came out a little slow, and started playing down to where they were at, but we were able to work on a few things, so it worked out,” Poland said.
